How bad are roosters?? I got my baby chicks in May. All hens. I was told that a roster will protect the flock. I only have 3 red and 3 black with white specs. A long time ago a neibor told me thats he wouldnt complain a bout chickens but if I got a roster he would complain. His house is about 2 hundred feet from my coop. The question then is how loud can they really be? Maybe he woun't notice? Is it really that importian to have a rooster? I have one hen that seems to be in charge. the others follow her every move. This is my first time getting chicks and want to do every thing right. LOL Thanks Scotty

If your neighbor says no to a roo, then you had better not get one. They are extremely loud. I have several, but I'm out in the country and zoned agricultural, so nobody can really say anything here. There is also a lady who lives a quarter mile up the road from me who has 2 roos and I can hear them at my house. They are very loud.

If you have a grumpy neighbor I wouldn't push the issue

You don't have to have a roo unless you want fertile eggs. Your top hen will guide the others, as she is doing

True a roo will try to defend the girls, but it also depends on the roo's personality - they are not all created equal

I have 1 boy right now - a little serama. He runs to his girls when they make 1 little peep, then he doesn't know what to do

I think he has a huge personality, but he knows his boundaries... He's also very quiet when he crows - loud for such a little bird, but being only 50 feet or so from my bedroom window, I don't wake up from him crowing. Neither does hubby, and I'd know if Sunny was waking him up in the mornings

So, my advise to you is to stick with your girls and not get a roo

After all, you do have to live next to the guy...

I am also a newbie chicken owner. My son brought home our first 2 from school and we were promised they were hens. Only one was. We have since gotten 2 more chicks from the feed store and they both turned out to be roos as well. Trust me when i tell you they are LOUD! The older roo is a RIR and he crows all day long. You can also hear him all the way down the block! Fortunately one of my closer neighbors grew up on a farm and likes listening to him! Of the younger 2 (they are about 7 weeks) one is already starting to crow though he is a young bantam and sounds very squeaky at the moment. I'm sure once they all get going it will be very noisy around here. You definitely won't sneak one past your neighbor so if you're worried about good relations with him don't get a roo.

So you really dont need a rooster? Thanks scotty

if you don't have a rooster one of the hens becomes the top dog and protector.. i have 2 roos and they are about 150' from the house inside a coop and they still wake me up at dawn.. they are horribly loud.. but i love it . don't think the neighbors would..good thing there is no one else around

I hadn't planned on having roosters, but my 2 alleged Rhode Island Red pullets turned out to be Rhode Island Red-Leghorn Cross roosters.

I actually like the crowing. And, I think the largest of the roos is so handsome. He's staying. I don't plan on breeding and hatching chicks, so I don't mind keeping a cross bred. Although, in order to keep him, I need more hens.

I asked our closest neighbor (about 500 yards through the woods) if he could hear the crowing. He said that he hadn't heard anything, but if he did, he'd shoot the bird. I told him that if he did that, I'd knock his house down with the backhoe

Humm I wonder if my neibor will feel the same way? LOL Im going to wait for a bit but i might ask him if its really a big deal. Whatching the ladies is really fun. Its turning out to be good entertainment for company when they come over. My neibor dosent even know i have them yet be cause there quiet. I no a rooster might give them away

. when im done with all the consruction to the coop ill invite him over to check it out . Then he might beable to appreceate the hens

Like I do Thanks for listening Scotty

rimshoes wrote I do not know about your chickens, but i see you have an evil
Umbrella Cockatoo !!

He is actualy really friendly to people and dogs. Doesnt like chickens though?

I haven't heard a rooster crow but my cookatoo can scream pretty loud. My neighbor hasnt complained about him yet. Then again my house is a good 600 feet from his house. The coop is 200 feet from the neighbors house.
