How big of a brooder?

I will be getting 12 chicks. How big of a brooder do ya'll reccomend I build?

We actually used a very large box, and it survived two rounds of chicks.... We didn't have to build anything.

I used a extra dog cage, worked great.

Try getting a pumpkin box from the grocery store...you know the octagon shaped ones that fold flat? They keep them from jumping out for a long time

I use the plastic totes from the local Wal Mart...should work great for 12 chicks. I have also used large cardboard boxes my husband would bring home from the shop...also worked great.

Lots of people use plastic tubs. I use a large fish tank.

all they need for space is 1/2 foot per chick

I asked this same question not to long ago, my dozen will be coming in April, and was told that up to 4 wks they should have 6 sq inches each and then 9 sq inches after that. Then it goes up to about 4 sq FEET as adults depending on your breed size.

i use a plastic or metal stock tank, they work great if you have one. If not, a big carboard box works too
