How can I bury chicken with ground frozen?

Sorry for your loss. When I was a kid, we had these things called picks for digging in hard ground. Maybe you can find one?

My original three hens are all buried under a honeysuckle bush at the back of the property, and 2 of the 3 had to be stored for a while in the freezer to make that possible. Also done it with beloved cats (in fact, I've taken a frozen cat across the border into the States to bury him in my parents' backyard which he knew well - try explaining THAT to the border guards!

They really do not take up much room in the freezer. That is the best route IMHO. Even if it displaces a carton or two of ice cream til April, it's probably worth it.

Pickaxing a deep enough hole in frozen ground is going to be an extremely hard job, unless it is just the top couple inches frozen. I've had to dig down to frozen waterlines and it can take literally days of work, especially if you are not super-fit. Usually people use a backhoe or other machinery for that, or knock together a little enclosure to put a heat lamp in to melt the ground to be easier to dig. Not sure that's such a reasonable option for burying a chicken.

If you do decide to bury your chicken, then i would put some moth balls down with it. It masks the smell so nothing will want to dig her up. We did that to my dog who died a few months ago. No problems since. I'm also sorry about your hen. Just about everyone on this site has been there.

So sorry for your loss. We have a silkie in the freezer camp right now awaiting burial when the ground thaws.
