How Can I Get A Hen UN Broody?

So I can go dunk my broody hen in some cold water, stick her in a cage, swing it, withhold food AND water, and it's not abusive?

I think the point is the OP does not want the chicken to die in the nest from refusing to eat.

I would also think that if you wish to disagree with the methods tried then you should come up with something more constructive or a method not yet tried.

It is one thing to disagree and another to be confrontational without being constructive.

Also,, in the way of help,, I believe I mentioned this earlier in the thread. Food and water is NEEDED in breaking broodies. Water and high protein are the primary ingrediants in the egg making proceess,,, so lots of water and boost the protein to jump start her egg laying process Cat or kitten food added to her lay ration works wonders,, or if you don't like the cat food for your chickens,, black oil sunflower seeds can be used as well

Not would you do this to a puppy....No you would go to jail. Why is it not the same???[/quote]

I think it is the same. Everyone certainly has a right to their opinion and there are many ways people choose to feed, house. and care for their animals. However, advocating something that could be illegal is another story.

I quickly looked up animal abuse laws in several states and countries. For example in Michigan, intentionally causing an animal pain or suffering is a felony. Failure to provide care (food and water in my opinion) is a misdemeanor for the first offense, and a felony for the second offense.

This thread and learning that people would treat animals with the methods being promoted is very upsetting. As a new chicken owner, I am glad to understand that hens may want to sit on and hatch their eggs. Makes perfect sense. I suppose I would either give my hen some fertile eggs or try to feed her on the nest. My girls are only 3 months old.

I believe it was stated they were dipped in COOL water,, not cold,,, again,, cooling off a miserable bird is abusive? Swinging? they manufacture chicken swings,, chickens are naturally inquisitive and playful animals. Cages? isolating birds when they are sick is done all the time to keep other birds form picking on them and to help get them well,, difference?
And if you want to equate puppies with chickens,,, people crate their puppies all the time when they leave home for the day to keep them from pooping on the floor and that is considered humane,, difference?

The only thing I see the OP did wrong was in not feeding and watering,, but we all make mistakes and I'm sure they took away a valuable lesson from it. That's all I'm saying on this matter.

Swinging back and forth isn't exactly the same as swinging in whatever direction, not being able to balance. And puppies shouldn't be locked in isolation for days, it isn't exactly the same. Sorry If I offended you, its just my personal opinion.

Being forced to swing in a cage is different than swinging for fun.

I am going to unsubscribe because now I'm sure she knows that that is NOT what you do to a broody hen, and there is no real point of posting once a problem is fixed.
