one of my hens was like that, the rooster was worried and start attacking me !!!

OMG just when I think I know who is laying what I go to check the nest and there is a WHITE EGG! I don't have any white egg layers.... I have 3 hens that are laying they all lay brown eggs one of those lays a tan egg but not even close to white I have a rooster who can't lay eggs of coarse and I have a chicken that is just too small and young to lay eggs yet.... SO WHAT THE WHAT?!?!?!

Look how light that eggs is?!?! The chicken that lays light colored eggs ... her egg was in the nest with it...

Here is a picture of what my other hens eggs almost always look like with the chicken who laid them names under the eggs.... This picture for some reason makes the egg look a bit more tented then it looks in person...

Mysterious, sneaky little critters, aren't they?

I am in the same boat trying to future out which of my girls are laying and who lays what.
Questions: will a chicken sit on an egg if she herself has not started laying yet?
Will a chicken who is laying not sit in the boxes at all other than when she lays her egg?
I have 6 girls all born the first week of April. 3 are now laying routinly and 3 are not. I had assumed the layers where my 2 RIR and my leghorn. But my barred rock has been having the rooster follow her around a lot recently and I wonder if maybe she is laying and only one RIR is laying. But both my RIR will sit in the boxes for periods throughout the day. The eggs are always two different shades each day (or can RIR lay different shades to each bird) I know the third egg is from my leghorn as I get a white egg 6 days a week and she OS my only white egg layer. Thanks for any tips as I am so proud of my girls its nice to tell everyone who's eggs they are enjoying.
Also is there something wrong that the other 3 girls are 5 months now and not laying yet? It has been very hot here but I have been very meticulous about keeping the girls cool and comfortable.

Answers:
1. yes. a chicken will set on any ones egg... even a fake egg.I have a chicken that will sit on anything. LOL

2. She may not feel the need to sit on eggs or in the box except for when she is laying an egg. I have chickens that plop their egg out and leave... they only go in the nest to lay the egg and as soon as it is out they leave the nest right away.
3. The color of the eggs from each chicken may be a slight different but not much. their eggs will almost always look exactly like the last one they laid.
4.they will be laying soon as long as they are not roosters

Thankyou so much for the info. The 6 I know are girls , I have a 7th (speckled Sussex)that turned out to be a rooster and a my 8th chick is a sebright bantam that is my flocks Roo. The eggs are always the 3 different colors but the same colors as the previous day. I have 2 more girls that are in a separate coop still as they are only 2 months old and on different feed

PEMPHREDO~I don't know but I'm jealous right now looking at the size of your eggs

I'm getting little pullet eggs right now, but that's okay, I'm still excited every day to get that tiny egg from the box. Like a nice present with a bow on it...I mean, feather, lol.

they are fairly decent sized huh? I never even thought about it before you said that. I'm so wrapped up in who is laying what that I haven't even taken the time to appreciate the size of the eggs LOL

yes, I would be so proud, lol. I am sure I'll be playing that guessing game when I get another girl laying. Right now it's just one. 3 more are acting like it will be any day and they are 19 weeks and over so, we'll see. Any new ideas on yours?
