Ok... 2 different situations but both are just "amazing"! My hubby & I went to a farmers market/flea market the friday before easter. There were people selling chicks/ducklings (of course). Now here are all these obvious "city people" (I mean no offense to anybody that lives in the city - these were gold chain, boxers sticking out of shorts, girls with short shirts and fake coach purses) walking around with a box of chicks... Literally, just about everybody had a peeping box! I wanted to ask somebody if they realized those cute little babies were going to grow up! I wish there were rules about selling animals like that. It made me sad...

Then, just last week, I was at a horse auction. This place has cleaned up it's act, but is still not a good place to be if you're an animal. At the door to go inside, a woman and 3 kids were sitting with a crate with about 6 puppies in it... OK, what's wrong with that you ask. The puppies couldn't have been any more than 1 week old!!!!! I was so freaking mad it wasn't even funny, but my husband kept me in check. I'm still wishing I would have called the humane society or something. The poor little things weren't even able to fully balance yet when they'd stand up! Come on, I can't believe people are that stupid! Who in their right mind would take puppies away from their mom at a week or less old? I actually think it's illegal to sell puppies that are less than 7 or 8 weeks old in PA, but don't know positively.

Well, that's my rant! It's been storing up for long enough! Being on this board helps restore my faith in people, but there will always be stupid somewhere close by I guess!

Again, sorry for the rant!!

Those poor puppies!
They should give out free informational pamphlets about raising chickens and what they require when they sell chicks.

I give an info packet whenever I sell something to someone new.

Oh I am sorry you had to see that.

I will openly admit...my husband and your husband combined could not have kept me in anything remotely resembling check. I would have been up her butt and in her face 6 ways to sunday, calling the humane society, the cops you name it.

Some FOOL will buy one and try to feed it puppy chow soaked in milk and wonder why it dies.

Oh dear oh dear!!!!!! thankfully here it is not allowed.... and all of our horse markets have an RSPCA (Humane Society) officer present while the sales are ongoing.... so for that I am thankful! ...

It takes pressure from buyers on the market organisers to bring about new selling policies, perhaps you could voice your concern firstly to them, and the Humane Society............

and why oh why don't owners who don't want their females to have puppies or kittens have them spayed............

my rant over..............

I have 4 dogs and a cat and ALL of them are spayed... I hate seeing people who dont spay thier dogs, unless they are a rare breed of dog and they plan to breed!

One of my nieces came home the other day with a kitten that seriously could not have been more than three weeks old.

You know why couldn't they wait just a little longer? The poor baby is nursing on anything it can suckle!

There are always people at the fair with boxes of puppies for free... I'm more the type to conduct interviews with prospective parents to make sure its going to a good home...bringing the poor dears to a drunken festival is not repsonsible at all!

Maybe the Momma was hit by a car, and the puppies were to much for her to handle. It happened to me, my dog run out of the house and was hit by a car, she had puppies, thank God there was only three! I think they were 3-4 weeks old.
I didn't give the puppies away till they were 7 weeks though, I felt I owed it to my Dog to care for her pups.
I would have asked in a nice way, why the pups were so young. I wouldn't have been able to stop my self.

No it is not legal, it's on the paper they give you when you get dog licenses.

I have a friend who has a cat (full grown cat) that still suckles like that - it was taken from it's mama too soon. It will suck on your shirt, you ear, your hair, anything.

Kittens that are taken from mamas too soon are most often developmentally disabled (even if they do survive the process).

When I was a kid we took in a puppy who's mama got hit by a car - bottle fed her, she grew up just fine. The lady had a bunch of the pups, and the one we took no one else wanted because she was a runt. They figured she wouldn't survive even bottle feeding. She was one of the best dogs I've ever had.
