How can you tell that your coop is under siege?

We love our monitor too. Ours is an electric model, we just ran an extension cord into the coop. We ours on the opposite side of the wall from where the chickens roost - that lets us hear any major noise without having to hear the constant rustles and toe clicks that go on all night. (we found that out the hard way, after not sleeping for 2 nights)

I haven't had anything actually get INTO my coop - but our girls woke us up frantically bawking at the snarls of the raccoon that tried. Perhaps our raccoon is an oddity - he/she seems to snarl at any little thing. We've frequently heard him snarling in the bird feeder, or as he attempted to pull one off a tree.

Am I right in thinking that chickens go into a kind of stupor on their roosts after sunset?

But when I go out to close the door to the run after dark, the hens still notice me and make comments and suggestions about the next days' treats choices...

Maybe predators are just so quiet, chickens never come out of the stupor...

FYI ,, if ya think your house is being "bugged", unless its very "high tech" you play a stupid song in ya house,, 1 you wont hear often on the radio,,, then go out to your car,, turn on ya radio,, and start going slowly through the fm bandwidth,,,, when ya hear "that song" playing,,,, your being bugged

some of the old "dial" scanners ,, can pick up the baby moniters,, cordless phones,, and answering services,, and pagers

My girls never went back into their coop last night to sleep, after their scare with the possum, but they made it thru safely. One of our hens is a Jersey Giant and she can be aggressive when threatened, that's probably why the possum wasn't actually in the coop when I went out there. I hope the girls find the courage to go back into their coop tonight. We are going to make sure the coop is secure today and get some live traps for the possum. A baby monitor is a GREAT idea! Our weather here has been so nice that all the windows were open last and that's why I heard them. But a monitor will be perfect for when the weather finally manages to cool. Our girls are such members of the family that I can't stand the thought of losing them to a disgusting beast.
