We love our monitor too. Ours is an electric model, we just ran an extension cord into the coop. We ours on the opposite side of the wall from where the chickens roost - that lets us hear any major noise without having to hear the constant rustles and toe clicks that go on all night. (we found that out the hard way, after not sleeping for 2 nights)
I haven't had anything actually get INTO my coop - but our girls woke us up frantically bawking at the snarls of the raccoon that tried. Perhaps our raccoon is an oddity - he/she seems to snarl at any little thing. We've frequently heard him snarling in the bird feeder, or as he attempted to pull one off a tree.
