how can you tell the gender of a chicken?

FYI, my bird is in fact a pullet, almost ready to lay, and a mixed breed -- bantam buff brahma and serama, supposedly. I managed to find her owner and returned her to him. We are sorry to see her go, but plan to get more chickens in the near future. Thanks for all of your comments.

it has a small crest so there has to be more to it, i would say silkie cross because of crest and feathered legs but it does not have black skin or a fifth toe(it doesnt look like at least)

Here is one for you- i have no idea on the sex so i need some help (Ive been told by a few BYCer's that its a hen)
She/he is around 18 weeks old (POL). I think it's a Bantam White Leghorn(not entirely sure).

Yes he/she has spurs, but I've been told hens can have longish spurs to.

The one on top with a straight comb is the one i think could be a rooster. The one below with the back to us is probably female.
if that is a hen... THOSE ARE THE HUGEST SPURS I'VE EVER SEEN ON A HEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!! it has a tail of a hen, but everything else looks like a rooster to me. plus, its HUGE!!!!!

it has some sort of crested breed in its background not necessary for it to be silkie though as there are other crested breeds ;)
