How close or far away is your chicken coop to your house?

About 50-60 feet. I don't think I'd want it much farther since I have to walk out there in rain, snow, or ice. It's well maintained and not smelly. If anything really big were to happen, I could probably hear a major ruckus. Fortunately I have it very secure and haven't had to deal with any issues like that.

"Yoda of Borg, I am. Assimilated, you will be. Futile, resistance is."

Does it mean I am a total nerd that I so got that and found it hysterical with my own mental image?

Anywho... Our setup is about 250-300 feet from the house.

Ours is @ 100 ft from the back door. The building was there already, we converted one room into the coop. It worked out pretty well, because when we put the dog fence up, we fenced from the house to the "house side" of that building. So when we did the coop and chicken run, we made it adjacent to the dog yard / back yard, so only had to do fencing on two sides. Far enough away that the rooster crowing is not annoying (hubby said no roosters - whoops lol!) and close enough that I can easily see what they are doing when they are in their yard.

Thanks for the quick response! Im planning on braking ground this weekend, so I'll keep you guys posted. Oh and thanks for all the great info. BYC has been SO helpful.

I have multiple coops/pens and free-ranging flocks. Birds closest to house best predator protection, me + dog. Birds further out have only dog unless I am notified which dog now does in Lassy fashion. Without dog, pens further out need to be constructed much better which denies mobility. Distance also a consideration with inclement weather. Carrying 5-gallon buckets of feed or water is physically demanding when snow, ice or mud is involved.

We built our new coop about 170 yards from our house. We live on a 4 acre lot and do not have a lot of trees. There were 4 things that decided where it was going to be built- as far away from our neighbor as possible, far enough away to keep the smell away from the house, close enough to keep an eye on them from our living room, and close enough to our vegetable garden for bug control/fertilizer. I wish it was a little bit closer to the house but we weren't exactly sure how our neighbor was going to react to chickens. Good thing he enjoys watching them and he even buys eggs from us every once in awhile too

Both locations have water and electric so that wont be an issue. The 100 yard spot is next to our gardens and orchard which have road access so drooping off feed wouldn't be a problem. I live in Chattanooga TN so weather isnt much of an issue. Predators on the other hand would be an issue. We have coyotes, coons, and hawks that frequent the property.
