How close or far away is your chicken coop to your house?

Mine too. I can pretty much let them free range most of the day if I am at home. I make jewelry and my work bench is in front of a window so I can look up and see them almost anywhere in the yard. Run gate stays open when they are out in case one needs to hurry back to the nesting boxes

There is a huge oak tree that covers a large part of our yard, three pine trees and a ficus inside their run and some deer netting over top, plus we have a very large covered deck so they have plenty of protection. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but a hawk would have a tough time trying to get down to get one of my girls - just no room for an easy swoop and escape. Grew up on a farm and saw plenty of that. Would love to have more room (acreage), just no longer able to do the upkeep.

Thanks for all the replays! I actually measured it this weekend and the distance was only 150 feet (50 yards) from the cabin. I see that I need to work on my yardage guess'timation skills. I started cutting the foot trail through the woods from our log cabin to the coop site this weekend. I cant wait for the morning stroll through the hemlocks to the coop with my daughter and a cup of coffee.

Chick show up in Feb, so its time to start gathering materials and digging holes.

Does it mean I am a total nerd that I so got that and found it hysterical with my own mental image?

Yes, you are a nerd. And in good company

Our coop is a few steps from the front door, just past the rabbit cages. I want to be able to catch a predator before it does too much damage.

The original coop is about 70 ft from the house. The storage shed was later made into coops and I don't believe it's quite as far, but haven't measured the actual distance. It may be 10-15 ft closer than the first coop, just a guesstimate.

Hey, WaldensRidge, do you live on Walden Ridge in TN? Just wondering.

our coop is right next to our house about 10 ft from back yard. I have a photo on my page if you would like to see it. they are like part of the family here. range in the yard all day everyday and my avatar picture is my 4 birds on my back porch

I built a garden shed before I decided I wanted chickens so the garden shed blocks sight of the chicken coop from the house. The coop is about 150 feet from the house, 250 feet from the door I like to use and much closer to 150 if I use the bedroom/deck door.

That makes the coop both too far and too close. Too far for me to snowshoe or carry feed, and too close for the chickens to free-range. They tend to enjoy traipsing all around the house. I'd really like them to keep their poo in back with most of our 30 acres.

We haven't had any snow -- yet -- so I can't tell how tough the trudging will be with my CHF, but I had Rusty the Rabbit in the garden shed last winter and managed to get him cared for. The coop is 20 ft or less past the garden shed. This winter Rusty is living in the space above the chickens. So much easier to tend.
