how cold is too cold?

I checked her and tried to shoo her back in the shed, but she would come right back out. She is the more stubborn of the two sisters. Have to go out again in a few minutes, will see what she is up to today. I am assuming she realized that the water is warmer than anywhere else with the heater in it and decided that she liked it.

No, i completely understand i have one from June Mabel, she was hatched here.. little bugger.. with this cold though, she has come in.. having heated water will help, mine got in one of the basic rubber bowls.. i don't have the heated trough turned on due to concerns of icing.

We are in the middle of a blizzard here in the atlantic province of Nova Scotia. Extreme windchills like Going Quackers is having. I have to take fresh water out 4 times a day because it freezes solid in 2-3 hours. Worst time to have lost one of my best insulated gloves. Yup, near frozen fingers with openning latches, pouring water, unhooking water buckets. It does hurt by the time you get into the house never mind hauling water and bringing in buckets frozen that need to thaw before the next changeup. We are siting at -15F with the windchill. Or -26C for us Canadians. all I can say is keep them watered, fed and bedded well out of the elements as best as possible and get back inside the house fast to warm yourselves. I can't see my barn and its only 40yards from the house.

Hey neighbour!

-40 here yesterday with windchill.

My water froze last night in the barn. Took buckets of hot steaming water down this morning and my goats went nuts for it. Head butting one another to get a drink of the soothing warm water.

The chickens liked it too.

This weather sure is unusual. Cold as heck. This is my first year with animals (birds) and its challenging at times with the cold but their resilience and tolerance to cold amazes me. I don't have livestock like horses, sheep or goats yet, maybe in time once I have a new barn built.

Sweet Brown, my duck swims no matter what the weather. He is not even close to being bothered by the cold. Tough as nails that duck.
