I have a chicken coop and am getting ready to build a "run" under an overhang of a barn. I have chain link fencing i am using for that, my question is how far down into the ground do I need to put the fencing to prevent digging of predators? I was thinking of using chicken cloth laid flat. I have 1x10 boards that are going to be at the base of the run all the way around. would it be better to bury the fencing/cloth vertically or horizontally and how far down? thanks in advance.

I wouldn't bother burying fence. Just lay some fence flat on the ground extending 18 to 24" from the base. Much easier and works just as well.

i was going to do that, but thought they would just dig under that too...ill try it and see. can always bury it later i guess

I just run a tiller next to the pen. Maybe 4" deep then a foot horizontal. I trap quite a bit anyhow as new critters are always moving in out in the stick but have only had a few occurrences where something has tried to dig in. From the looks of their digging they give up pretty quickly when they find it has wire under the ground.
