How did I count wrong?

It may not be you. When I got my Khaki Campbell ducks, I got 25. I counted those babies quite often while I was brooding them, then when I moved them to a grow-out pen I counted daily to make sure I wasn't missing any. Again, when I put them in their adult run, I moved 25 ducks. A few weeks later, I was doing a head count to make sure everyone was accounted for, and I had 27! The extra birds remained a mystery until my dh happened to mention them to a neighbor. Seems the neighbor had a couple of KC hens on his pond that disappeared one day. Apparently, the two were attracted to my flock and just moved right in. Could this be what happened to you? Especially if someone close had a single chicken, as they really don't like being alone.

Well I actually work at TSC and as busy as it can get this time of year it is very well possible to "get" an extra chick in your order. Trying to grab chicks here and there and place in boxes--its sometimes easy to "lose" count. LOL:lol:

Hey, don't argue!

Chances are there was a simple mixup, since they run around awfully fast, making it easy to lose count.

I have a pic of the 4 roos and 6 yellow pullets, so I must've brought home 7 red pullets the next day instead of 6. I just find it funny that it has taken me 8 weeks to realize that there is an extra. There is no way that it came in from outside either. Although there was a man here last week asking me to take his 5, 4 week olds, but I would notice a size difference, and he'd have to go in the downstairs of my barn and put it in the coop as there is no entry to the run. (but why only 1 of 5?)

This is great! Finally I have a way to explain why I have 22 chicks. We were going to order the minimum 15, but each breed had a 5 chick minimum. How can you resist a top hat special? So 5+5+5+5=22. Makes sense to me. Sadly my daughter will taking the end of grade math test tomorrow, and my math won't help her.

I just do it like this: If I want 5 chicks, I double it to account for Roo's and culls. So that is 10. Then, when I actually go pick them up, I get 10. Then the next time I am near a flea market, I buy 4 more, JUST to be sure....... So far this spring anyway.... Another swap meet on Saturday, my initial 5 may actually be there.
