Well all,
We got a good number of eggs for our first week of laying. A total of 19 eggs ranging from 2 ounces to 3 1/2 ounces. There were 3 eggs with double yolks and the 3 1/2 ounce egg had a triple yolk...Wahoo! I am hoping you can see the pictures of the really big egg...I included a standard white store bought egg which is Grade AA large as comparison. The biggest egg was a whopping 2 3/4 X 2 inches big. Which would technically be 25 eggs total. Has anyone else gotten a triple yolker? We did end up with about 5 soft shelled and one broken egg (which was layed from a height of about 3 feet) above and beyond the 19 good eggs we got. Is this a good amount of eggs for 16 week old chicks? Looked like our best day was 6 eggs, but 2 were soft shelled and one was the broken one, but 3 eggs were good. Some of the eggs, when we used them had a touch of purple in the white part of the egg. Is this normal or do we have a rooster and don't know it? All of the chickens have different sized combs and wattles. The concensus at 8 weeks was pullets all around, but I will have to resubmit pictures to see what everyone says. No one is crowing though, so I am hoping that we still have all girls.

Wow - congratulations! Our girls didn't start laying till over 19 weeks, so yours are getting an early start. The triple is a beauty! Our Ethel lays doubles once in a while, but nothing that huge yet. Tell 'em good job!

They are amazing creatures- lucky you getting a double yolk -
none of my girls has done so yet

wow thats a great selection of eggs for 16 weeks old! my 19 week old hens just a few started laying today. Lucky! i have had chickens for almost two years and have yet to have a double let alone a triple yolk egg ever! I'm a little jealous now haha what are you feeding them?

I feed them layer feed, occasional yogurt as a treat and all the veggie and fruit scraps we have. Once in a while they will get the leftover scrambled eggs and crushed up egg shells. They have chicken hutches from Ware in the chicken pen that is 20 ft X 24 ft. I have it covered with a tarp and we use a misting system at one end of the coop to keep the temperature down in the Arizona heat. They free-range in the back yard mostly in the evening when we are outside. They seem happy and the kids spoil them with lots of affection. I recycled some boxes from Sam's club that were just right to fit into the chicken hutches that are divided in the middle to make just the right size nesting area.

sounds like the same diet layer feed, grit, scraps from the kitchen, my sons left over yogurt and they have a run thats a 1/4 of an acre

We've had one triple yolker so far. It was about the same size as our huge double yolkers, but boy was I surprised when I cracked it open and found 3 yolks. I didn't even know there was such a thing. I think it was laid by on of the new layers and that's why her triple yolker was about the same size as the older pullets double yolker. My 3 new layers are about 6 weeks behind the rest of the flock.
