How did the Dorking chicken get its name?

I don't think "hurt" was implied, but rather Fred's Hens was stating that BYC isn't the only place to find things out. The internet is huge. I know that since I got my laptop, whenever I have an "I wonder..." moment, the first thing I do when I have internet access is look it up. Plus, the act of "surfing the net" can lead to finding out more than just the answer to the original question (just keep a skeptic eye on the source of the information....), which greatly improves your ability (over time) to win points at Trivia Pursuit.

I dont need my ability to find things out, improved. I know how to research but like I said Im not going to research a breed im not doing. it was just a question of curiosity an one SMALL question.
im not going to look up information that is going to be useless to me. easy answer to my question would have been "named after a town" or "because their as air headed as Silkies." thats all I wanted to know! simple right? I've seen more pointless posts on here that the OP didnt get jumped!

There is a lot of historical information on chickenbreeds in a dutch book i have. On Dorking they write: 2 centuries ago the Roman Columnella allready described a chickenbreed that resembles the Dorking as we know it today, but if the Romans took the breed to England or if it was developed in England isn't sure. in 1760 nature researchers Brisson and Gmelin called the same typed birds as the Roman described : " Fabulous tablebirds of Dorking' not necesarilly a created breed from Dorking but at least a heavy breed been prepared Dorking style for dinner a lot, appearantly that's how they've gotten their names.

I'm glad that the question was asked. I have often wondered (on the occasions that I have seen their name listed) why they were called dorkings myself, but hadn't looked it up. Now because of backyardchickens.com, I now know.

Yay!!! I can add a new chicken fact to memory.

When someone asks a question on here and I answer it, Its because I have already looked up the answer PRIOR to the OP posting it! so thanks for trying to twist my words but not going to happen

besides I ALSO said the name made them sound like Silkies, air headed, so the only thing anyone needed to say it "named after a town" or "dumb as Silkies" I didnt want the whole life history of the bird!
