How did your chicken get it's name?

In the Spring of 2008 I got a couple BO pullets are known as "The Blondes". The prettier one is Marilyn and the other one is Mary. That same year we also got "The Brunettes" which are Partridge Rocks -- Mama (the only successful Broody until recently) and Not-mama. We also, have a "Redhead" Maggie Mae a RIR.
I haven't named many of my chickens from this last Spring, but here's the named ones:
Mr. Redneck Crooked-Toe --a Production Red rooster with guess what?
Robert Redford -- a BO roo
Matilda -- an Australorp hen
Big Blackie -- a Jersey Giant roo
Penny -- a BO/RIR hen
Splish and Splash -- a couple of Splash Silkies
Little Barb -- a BR hen

A friend's Grandmother died the same day I had chicks hatch, so in honor of her I have Lorena or Lorenz depending...
Dale-Ann

I have an Guinea named Edwina after a Doctor I work with whose name is Edmund. He kept kidding me that when the economy drops out, he will be working for me for eggs! So I named one after him! (already had the chickens named).

Daisy; because my dad has been called "daisyboy" for years by my aunt
Peppi; it means "baby" in maori, and peppi is the smallest
Analise; because my little brother likes the girl next door...
Shirley; its my mums name.

We recently got a blue Cochin pullet and named her Babbette after the feather duster in the movie Beauty and the Beast. She looks like a feather duster!

DH had surprised me w/the 4day old girls,as he called from the road headed home and wanting me to guess what he was bringing,I couldnt figure out what it was. After he told me and said there was 4 of them, eenie, meenie, miney n mo popped into my head..My DS didnt like the names and said they should be;cordon blue, nugget, fried n baked...Of course he did not win that battle. He was trying to be a smarty pants.lol

Most of my girls names are run of the mill names. Had to name them something after all.

Only the special girls have ever gotten what are essentially "fitting" names.

The common names are
Clarissa - GSL
Rachel - BR
Rosie - BR
Abigail - GSL
Kate - BO - Deceased
Alice - BO - Deceased
Mildred - BO - Deceased
Molly - GSL - Deceased
Mabel - BO Deceased

Now for names that have a bit of reason behind them:
Gimpy - BO - Deceased - when she was young, about maybe two weeks old, she developed a slight hitch in her stride. So, I called her Gimpy Girl.

Lacey - GSL - Deceased - When she completed her fledging of her first feathers, she had the most beautiful lacy appearance out of all of the GSL's. Hence the name Lacey. We also used to live just outside of a town called Lacey in Washington State...it just fit.

LizzyBeth. - BR - Deceased - Well, her name was going to be an "R" name to match her two sisters, Rachel and Rosie, but when the brain damage became apparent, DH started calling her Dizzy Lizzy. I thought that was just a bit too cruel and didn't sound hopeful for her. So, I modified it to LizzyBeth. Elizabeth just sounded too formal for my girls.

FussyButt - BO - as her name implies, she's a fussy little thing. Has a bunch of comments to make over every single event, every single day! No happening ever goes without comment with FussyButt around!

Brewenna - indeterminate mutt - She was half again as big as all the other chicks in our first ever batch of little ones. I was sure she was a roo in the making. So, I had originally called her Brewster the Rooster! Surprise!! HEN!

So, Brewenna was about as close to a female version of Brewster as I could think of.

Rita - GSL ...she used to be the ugliest thing you ever say...so I always told her that her name was short for "Lovely Rita" as in the Beatles song

When she finished up her molt this year, by golly if she didn't turn out to be just that! The loveliest girl in the coop!

April, Maaayvis,(yes, I spell it like that because that's the way you're supposed to say it!
gig.gif
: ) and JuneBug - LB. I had April and Maaayvis first. JuneBug came a few hours later when it looked like Maaayvis wasn't going to make it and the feed store replaced her without question. It's a long story how that all came about and I won't bore you with the details...Suffice it to say that I ended up with three LB's when we had only intended to have two. Maaayvis later died of a misadventure in eating a newt. So, now we just have April and JuneBug.

So there you have it. I don't think I missed anyone. I'm loving this thread too! It's giving me some great ideas for next spring when we add some new girls to the flock to make up for those we've lost over the course of this last year.

Well having a bantam black cochin I had no trouble coming up with the name Abby- I'm a rabid NCIS fan, and well for those that don't watch it Abby is the geeky lab goth-heavy into wearing black. She needed a girly buddy name, and Kate was out of the question, so that left me with Ziva, which when named Ziva was more aggressive than Abby, but thats not true anymore.

You have chickens with brain damage!

I had a cat who was having a hard time giving birth, so I took her in to the vet. They told me that one was born naturally, and the others had to be taken C-section. I think the first one suffered hypoxia, as she was "simpler" than the others. Her name is Einstein.

Well, we have 2 remaining hens <both EE> from our original flock. they are 4.5 years old now.

-Mercedes <head hen>
-Esther <formerly Ladybird>

When those two were young, we got them as just days old chicks from the feed store. We got them and a bunch others at the same time, for a total of 8. In the brooder, Mercedes was a racer!! Round and around and around and around, flapping her wings as fast as she could! She never stopped!! And then when she finally went to sleep she purred. My DH said she reminded him of a little car engine, and decided to call her Mercedes. She literally would make a "vroom" sound ! It was hilarious....

Esther was Ladybird, cos she was always so polite and sweet. She is just an amazing hen

Great adoptive momma too! She got her name cos she was so dainty and ladylike for everything...and just the sweetest little chick out of all of them. When she was about 2 tho, and we lost a lot of her sisters due to heart issues/internal laying etc, she started making a sound that reminded me very much of my great aunt Esther. Don't know how to describe it, but it was very much an old lady noise. She was a good woman tho, and I loved her dearly.... she was an old farm woman so I dont think she would have minded much my naming a hen after her lol

Now we have the babies <young pullets now just about!> They had a bunch of different names as chicks...like Potpie, Chrissy etc but they have all changed for the most part.

-Camilla :white plymouth rock
-Oprah: black australorp
-Peaches: buff orp
-Gloria: buff orp
-Beaker: black australorp
-Silver girly: EE
-Buffy: EE

Camilla and Gloria are best buddies. They were named after the Muppets! Camilla looks just like Gonzo's ladylove, and we thought we remembered Gloria being her partner in crime. So the names fit

These two are into EVERYTHING. We redid the coop slightly the other day to add ventilation up top, and as we looked thru the window that was there, there were those two girls supervising everything! Nosy nosy girls
smile.png
Where one is, the other is clsoe by...trouble comes in twos!

Oprah is so chattery....and she seems to love the Oprah show lol We had to bring her in to wash some stuff off of her and the Oprah show was on, and she was straining her little head to see the show. So we cleaned her off and let her watch. She stayed still and quiet and just watched it. So, we named her after that!

Peaches is our larger BO, and is just a big fluffnugget bird. Really sweet...so we called her Peaches. Beaker got her name cos she sounds like the Muppet. Meep Meep Meep all day long from her lol

Silver girly is our prettiest EE!!!Very distinctive colouring on her as well. We couldnt come up with a particular name for her, other than Silver Girly, but she seems to like it! She comes when we say it so she must know it is her name.

Buffy is the buff/gold EE. She has lovely dark gold colouring...very different from the BO's. And a gorgeous set of muffs too! She is the shyest of them all... very flightly and skittish. But when we do see her she is always with her beak in the air like she just don't care lol Reminded me of a Valley girl, so we called her Buffy.

Our former flock <all deceased now> we had:
-Sunny....BO She had lovely bright gold feathers that shone in the sun.
-Roxie....BO She had an attitude for being a runt lol
-Little Red...RIR She reminded us of the story of the Little Red Hen.
-Boo.....BR <-----greatest chicken EVER!!! Chicken Boo from Animaniacs
tongue.png

-Lacey....GLW She had gorgeous lacing on her
-Hawkgirl...<EE> She looked like a baby hawk with the colouring
