It is the Hatch a Long forums fault that I currently have 15 chicks and an incubator full in my house!

Ok so now there’s another contender for who laid. Or they’re both laying. Who knows? Today’s egg is slightly darker and larger. They both have smudges of something on their fluffy butts. Their vents look almost exactly the same. Looking at the eggs I think both. If so the right egg from yesterday is the Australorp’s and the left from today is the Light Brahma’s. Although the bossy Brahma (ironically named Sweet Baby), isn’t squatting. I know eggs start small and get larger over like the next month. I haven’t heard anything about the color changing. But as usual, I can be and probably am wrong.

In summary, I need to pay attention to my other hobbies. I’m going to read a book or listen to a story or take a nap.

I think it’s the Brahma. Which is crazy because I expected her to be one of the last. Wild, no layers to 2 in 2 days. When should I expect another eggs from them? From what I understand the Australorps lay pretty frequently.

They’ll probably be all over the map in the next several weeks as their hormones and various stages along the reproductive tract get in synch.

You might find soft-shelled and shell-less eggs during this time. Sometimes their hormonal triggers release two eggs in a day (or a similar variant), and they shoot through the reproductive tract so quickly that they don’t get a shell fully deposited.

Don’t panic if that happens, and also don’t panic if you find them pecking at or eating a shell-less egg. Mine did that once or twice, I think out of curiosity, but I’ve never once had an egg-eater of a fully-shelled egg.

Congratulations! And in a month, you’ll probably be posting to ask what on earth you can do with all these eggs.
