Looks like the actual part of the ovary also released itself with the yolk. I think it is ovarian tissue + blood. Someone double check me, would the ovarian tissue turn that dark red/black?Well I cracked the egg and it look like this. Now I alarmed.
Clever girl! This was actually last week, but the chicken I was certain to be my first to lay wasn't laying. She's a big calico princess and her comb and wattles got big and she was squatting. But others started laying and she still wasn't.

Then one day last week I heard a ruckus in the shelves at the back of the coop and thought a rat or raccoon had somehow gotten in. Until Minnie popped her yellow head up and gave me the chicken side eye. She clambered out from behind the bins and I lifted her down and pulled out the bins. Oh.

Rascal. I've had to block off that shelf, and now she is laying in the nest boxes like she's supposed to.
My chickens do that all the timeUtterly abandoned me after discovering I didn't have treats![]()
Speckling can show up when the brown coat isn't applied evenlySo who’s laying? Hell if I know. How many different colors of egg do y’all see? Also I have a speckled one without having any breeds known for laying speckled eggs. I still haven’t seen a blue or green egg. Also when should I expect laying to pick up? Getting 1-2 eggs per day for 5 potential layers & 2 confirmed. Or should I expect low numbers until spring despite them being new layers? For some reason I thought new layers would just lay close to regular amounts even through winter. View attachment 4244075View attachment 4244076View attachment 4244077
