How do I add more protein?

Also I have an old book produced by the Farm Journal Circa 1910. That book has a ration that includes Mangel Wurzels I have never heard of that. It also includes meat scraps as thought they may have been readily available at that time. I am wondering if one could readily purchase meat scraps at that time.

beat ya to it some kind of darn beets

This particular author espoused the virtue of the modern feed made up of

49 lb cracked corn
29 lb Mangel Wurzels
13 lb beef scrap (seems that would need to be mostly protein)
31 lb wheat bran

Seems like the beet can be different colors. This old book produced by the Farm Journal has given me many hours of entertainment

The first Farm Journal was produced in 1870 and I am quite certain is still in publication today. The old book I have has a paid reciept dated 1930 for a ten year subscripton to the Journal for 2.00 I am guessing the subscriptions have gone up a bit since then

Dawn Suiter: what can I do with it besides mix in seed of which I do not use? I use organic feed and various supplemental food including brown rice with garlic, oatmeal and unsweetened applesauce, chopped cabbage, chopped lettuce, chicken parfait which I found on this forum (yogurt ,fruit cheerios I found out Cheerios have ALOT of salt not good so I offer not too often, shredded apple, bananas, salmon, alfala sprouts, broc sprouts, grated carrots, grated cukes, mashed canned pumpkin, celery tops)
Do you have another way I could give it to them and amount as well as how often?I have 15 week old SILKIES who are not a convincible bunch, however if they like something watch out...............mayhem...lol

Meat is generally high in water and only about 20% protein. This is why, contrary to popular belief, prey model raw diets (for dogs/cats) are NOT especially high protein diets. I believe it's great for the birds!

My chickens won't eat cat food, even if I throw it out with their BOSS, but I've seen my cats pick it out of the grass kibble by kibble after the chickens leave it.

I feed Purina Flock Raiser and BOSS to boost protein for my birdies. They also get meat sraps from time to time (I collected 2 turkey carcasses Thanksgiving)
Also if you look it up, mealworms are supposed to be something like 50% protein --- so they're a good snack and my birds go CRAZY for them!!!!

I use turkey and game grower cut with scratch.. Had my seramas go listless on me with flock raiser.. Use the same with my ducks and lone turkey but with added added dog food for a treat. Mainly because they won't shut UP without it. The flax and gelatin is a VERY good idea. I'm going to try that with the regular pelleted feed. Of course the dog food is still a given.

I tried to order mealworms from mainland as our island did not know when they would get more ........... they died on route. I understand they are high in protein !
