I am about to hatch some chickens and I would like to DIY a coop ready but I am inexperienced with builds like this! I’m planning to keep around 4-5 chickens and I would like a fair amount of space in the actual coop, do you guys have any designs that worked for you?
Thanks!

Hey April, good luck with the hatch :fl

What sounds like such an easy request is actually gigantic ;) It depends on the lay of your land, your predator risk or lack thereof, your location, your climate, your susceptibility to chicken math resulting in you having way more than 4-5 :p Etc Etc

Being in a tropical area of Aus with high humidity and torrential rain, we went for a raised coop with a slatted timber floor for added ventilation. This is not going to work somewhere where it snows.

I reckon a good place to start is the Coop & Run Forum and if you have not popped in to your local state thread and said hello as yet, you might want to Find Your State Thread as those folks will be able to advise you with regards climate, predators etc.

The Learning Centre also has a section on Housing & Feeding Your Chickens with links to some good ideas and coop pages etc.

Oh yeah, general rule of thumb, each large chicken requires 4 square foot of coop space, 10 square foot of run space and 2 foot of roost space. If you go down the kit coop path [not recommended] halve the amount of chickens it is advertised to accommodate. If it say 10 chickens it is most likely suitable for 5 max!

Oh and one last tip, chicken wire is good for keeping chickens in but not for keeping predators out so steer clear of it if you can.

Good luck.

You can check out my thread, Helpful hints for building coops. I built an 8x10 coop and i show a lot of pictures. I also started a hoop coop around page 91 so you can see how that goes. You can build smaller versions of either coop. Good luck

Honestly I'd look at the coop pages and find things you like some things I'd reccommend are:

1.Easy to clean
2.Well ventilated
3.Roost bars higher than nesting boxes
4. 4sq ft of space per chicken in coop
5. 1 ft of roost per chicken in coop
6. Predator proof for your area
7. Roosts should be big enough for chicken to completely cover feet when hunkered down (2x4 with sanded edges works great, fat side up)

Should have started building 3 months before you set the eggs to hatch ;) :D

Look at building, or buying, a shed,,
adding the other stuff is pretty easy if you do your research here..

My hoop coop is nearing completion, tomorrow is 2 weeks from the start.
