How do I get a sucessful hatch with a Little Giant Still Air?

Oh, and can you get hydrogometers at Walmart? I live in a very small town and have like 3 stores.

Because they are a room thermometer, not a medical thermometer. Some are a combination thermometer and hygrometer. Accurite makes one like that. With mine, the hygro reading is the top one and the temp is at the bottom.

Oh, okay. That makes sense.

I have heard people say that their chicks burned themselves on the heating elements in the LG and the Hovabator. There just isn't a lot of head room. If you have a brooder set up close by, I would wait until they start getting active then take them out and put them in the brooder. I've never personally hatched anything in the LG... I have a homemade cooler-incubator that I use as a hatcher.
With the cartons, if you're incubating in them, slice the bottoms off. If you're just using it to hatch, then leave them whole. That way it's easy cleanup too.

Just put them in there pointy end down, increase the humidity, and sit and wait.

Yeah, because its just that easy! Those 3-4 days after you stop turning are the longest 3-4 days of your life! LOL! When they start hatching I tend to be standing by the bator looking through the plastic window on top the whole time.

I have two LG's and one Hovabator - all still airs, and I prefer the LG's. I have the auto turners, which work great, and I hatch in egg cartons which increases the hatch rate. It's all about getting to know your equipment, and the LG's are simple (that's why I like them LOL!)

Sorry to butt in but I have a question !

LilRalphieRoosmama are you saying that you use the auto turner until day 18 and then take it out and put eggs in cartons large end up instead of laying them on there sides on the screen ?

IM on day 9 with LG with turner and fan. This is my first hatch so wanting to know why you put them in egg cartons ? Card board or styrofoam cartons. Do you need to trim them at all ?

it makes sure that the air cell is up, and holds the egg in place it make it easy for the chick to get out. cut the bottoms off of the egg carton if u want to use it the hole time (put them in like a alto tuner tilt one side then the other ) by placing something to tilt them 30 deg, homemade turner is what they do that for. ps i use card board

Do you have trouble with the chicks burning their heads?

I had trouble with them bumping/burning their heads on my last hatch, so I opted to pull them out very quickly and into the brooder, but then all of the other eggs didn't hatch, so I think it may have ruined the hatch.
