Is there a way to train chickens to lay on their eggs? Or do they do it to their own content?

There is no way to make them unless they are ready to sit and you will know then because they will sit in the nest and not move some will even squawk at you if you try to move them. if they really want to sit they will sit on nothing a non fertile egg or a fertilised one.

I agree. Going "broody", as they call it, is a hormonal thing, and there is no way to make it happen. Some breeds tend to go broody more than others, and some breeds may never go broody. Putting fake eggs or golf balls (never real eggs) in the nests seems to encourage it, however. Edited because I can't speak, or, write and just now noticed it.

Welcome to BYC and good luck.

Add fake eggs to the nest. When they have a clutch it increases the chance of them setting.
