Thank you for contacting someone to get him!

So many people just shoot them or worse, try to keep them as "pets".

My first Hawk, "Chance", was in a very similar situation when he came to me for rehab. He was poorly and on the ground, sick and weak. We had a string of really nasty weather, and he ended up sick and wormy, and I am pretty sure his mother had died before he was ready to be without her. I ended up keeping him for two years, training him to hunt properly and building him up from his illness.

I've had other birds, Coopers, Harris Hawks, and an African Pied Crow, but rehabbing Redtails....they are a class of their own.

Ok, you guys can go ahead and filet me, but how cool would it be if she could have kept him? In a very safe cage, of course, and only handled him with gloves?

redtailgal, correct me if I am wrong, lots of comments about wanting this hawk as a pet... It is a federal crime to have these bird without the proper training and permits. It is also a federal crime to interfere in anyway with migratory birds. You can not shot them, shot at them or set off firecrackers or really anything to run them off. Sorry.

This was handled properly and i am glad no one was injured... especially the chickens and the cat (9 lives thing)

Yes, keeping him would have been cool, awesome even AFTER you have read the materials, taken the appropriate tests to get your apprenticeship's liscense, found a mentor to train for you two years, BUILT a cage (called a mews and is around 10 feet by 10 feet MINIMUM that must be built to a certain code), gotten your inspections done by the states. Of course, when you keep the bird, you have to locate the proper food, (hint, its not at the grocery store), the bird must be released and allowed to fly freely SEVERAL times a week after very intense and time consuming training.

To keep one of these birds legally, is a fabulous experience, but it is costly and very very time consuming. They must be fed daily of course, but they also need to be weighed at least once a day to maintain the proper weight for them because their metabolism is very touchy. They need very specific care, or they get sick and die, every single time.

If you are interested, google Falonry for your state and see if there is a "meet" that you can go to. It will be well worth your while.

As for Chance, yes, after two years I would fly him daily and he was hunting and killing his food on his own. So, we went a few hours from my house, had one last hunt, but this time I didnt call him back. The last time I saw him, he was in the very top of a tree, wings spred and basking in the sunlight! He was a spectacular fellow and I hope that he found an equal fabulous lady friend.

My friends husband is a Falconer in Downtown Nashville and I was bringing her some eggs and saw that huge hawk in the backyard... talk about Ft. Knox... 1 inch steel bars going down a foot or two in the ground only a inch or two apart, but that was really cool, such intelligence in those eyes too. Made me want to be his next apprentice

Like I need more birds.
