How do I keep a rooster without making my neighbors mad?

Quote:
Build it out of 2x6 and insulate it. The insulation not only hold in heat, it holds it out too.

Should I put it outside near my garden and far from people houses or inside the shed? The shed seems to get rather hot and stuffy! but maybe it would be better than a self contained box out side I am not sure? also should I put the insulation inbetween two layers of plywood I am not very good at building thing but I do have a good drill, electric screw driver, and hammer and live close to homedepot

I am also about to post about expanding my coop/ tractor.

Thanks,
Henry

Yeah, you'd build it just like a house. After you have the frame up, you put the plywood on the outside, then insulation on the inside, then cover the insulation with plywood or drywall. Here's a guide to installing insulation.

It's rather dirty, and a bit expensive depending on how big your coop is, but it's worth it to me. For my 10x16 coop I'd say the added cost was probably $200

To keep my rooster from bother in the neighbors I close my chickens in their medium sized coop. It isn't dark and I don't have a solid door. The coop is windowed and the chickens' door is not solid, it's made of wire/screening. My rooster wakes up early and crows and I can still hear it but it is so muffelled that it's not bothersome at all. I don't worry about letting them out of the coop right away. I can sleep in if I want because the rountine has taught them to wait and be mellow till I let them out to their chicken run. I have a small chick waterer and a chick feeder in there but my 8 full grown hens and 2 roosters don't empty it completely by the time I let them out which between 8am-10:30am usually. I scoot them all in around dusk or I grab them after dark and put them in the coop.

I don't know if this helps anyone, I hope so.

Thank you so much everyone and Maryland Chick that is very helpful. I think my parents will let me get a roo at the end of the summer. I am also either getting a shed and converting it into a coop or building a coop my self which should be good to keep him quite.

THanks,
Henry

I posted this somewhere on a less active thread so I'll ask he as well. What kind of neighborhood do all of you live in? I think that a rooster even occasionally crowing in the middle of the day would bother neighbors where I live. Are we talking 1/2+ acre lots? I just live on a small lot with neighbors on three sides.

I live in a suburb with 1 acre lots although ours is 2 acres

we also have a field and a large neighborhood garden. I think that the occasional crow throughout the day would not bother anyone. My neighbors were alright about getting hens but I am not sure about a rooster. I feel that the quality of life of the hens and whole flock would improve with a rooster. I am also thinking about trying to switch from my tractor system to a less complex fixed coop with some free ranging. How are your roosters about protection. I would also like to be able to go in with my hens and pick them up and handle them how are your rooster about letting you do this ?

Thanks for your interest in this,
Henry

Have you seen the thread about "Have you been spurred?" You never know... you could have a good rooster that lets you do whatever, or you could have one like mine (that's going in the stew pot tonight) that attacks without provocation. Nothing like having a 15-20# rooster throw itself at you with both feet! Not to scare you off, but unless you want to breed your chickens and raise more, I would leave your girls roosterless. Our roo has picked his favorites, and despite saddles he has worn their backs and wings almost smooth. I feel bad for them and I'm sure they'll be much happier without him. Or stick with a bantam breed... they still get the job done, but without the damage.
This is just my experience... I'm sure others will tell you different based on their experiences. But if you're on the fence already, IMHO, I'd leave the rooster out.

Oh don't worry if he attacks me I will try to hold him and tell him I am boss but next time its yummy rooster stew. I do have 11 hens but if he breeds to hard its either yummy rooster stew or he gets 45 mins with the hens a day if it comes to that. I am trying to breed ameraucanas and that is why I am interested hopefully he will be a nice quite gentle rooster is he will be culled.

Thanks,
Henry
