how do i know how old my baby chick is and whats its gender?

My roommate gave me a baby chicken and I don't know that much about baby chicks besides what I've researched.

If they bought it at a store, the store should know the hatch date.
The gender will take some time, especially without others of the same breed for comparison.
Chickens are flock animals and need friends. A lone chicken doesn't fare well. I wouldn't start with less than 3.
