Hi - super excited to finally have my own chickens!

Hi! We're so glad you found BYC! It's the best place to start when preparing for chickens!

I don't think you can go wrong with most any layer or dual-purpose breeds, really (unless they don't suit your climate) so you can just shop by color, haha. I believe 'friendliness' is really down to the individual bird, but sure some breeds are generally friendlier (like Orpingtons). Some of my most friendly chickens were also breeds that were the most "flighty" but they have been some of the most inquisitive and productive birds in the flock and a joy to keep as well.

I hope you will keep us posted as to how all your preparations are going and I hope you find any answers you are looking for here! Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Hello welcome to BYC. Glad you joined us. Check out the forums for information. I researched and researched before I decided on Japanese quail. However, I'm still learning. This site is great for information and ideas. Take your time doing your research, work out why you want/needs birds and take it from there.
Also watch out for chicken math(s). Research chicken math(s) before you do anything else!!!!! I didn't and now the 6 quail dream is turning into "eh we need to move, I need more land" 😆 😂.
