thanks sourland

and SORRY if i had the same question and just explained MY situation to see if we are getting a broody.
im with sourland on this one and am confused at your response to sourlands post -theres different actions between the two? is this because no 2 chickens are exactly the same so their behavior is not going to be exactly the same but i was just going with the title -HOW DO I KNOW IF A CHICKEN IS BROODY?
i can see your point with my egg mania and not wanting to mix breeds, but the point of my post is asking if her behavior would indicate broodiness

Well, to add to the confusion, I have a Brahma roo who insists on perching on top of the nests and guarding the girls who lay. He'll even sit next to a particular hen while she's laying.

I think the BR is just a grumpy chicken who plucks her feathers out, bites if she is disturbed on the nest and leaves the eggs. I don't see her on the eggs/golf balls in the evening.

Now, I'm going to have to watch Java the EE. She sleeps in the nest at night and hangs out there a lot during the day.

Sounds like she's thinking about it. I wait until they are on the nest 3 nights before giving any eggs, just to be sure they are going to stick with it. Just make sure the eggs are all set at the same time. Don't add eggs later, as the hen will have to decide whether to let the chicks die to hatch the eggs, or let the eggs die to raise the chicks.
