how do i make a dust bathing area for my chickens

how do i get them to use the place i make for them and not the rest of the yard they have places in my yard where they like to bust bathe and they make holes in the yard and i would like to make them there own area

Only way I know of is either lock them up. Or put something to block them out while you fill in and let the grass grow back over it. My girls don't make new holes, they only use existing dirt areas and gopher holes. You could even just put a piece of chicken wire or hardware cloth over it after you fill it in.

To encourage scratching at you new area, you could try tossing some scratch or meal worms in there?? I've never had to en courage them though. It's like if there's dirt, they will come!

Some of the holes in my yard have become chasms from all that they carry away with them. And that is just one reason why I won't use DE.

I've seen some with 4x4 wood framing filled with dirt (not sure what kind) and a basic plywood roof about a ft or 2 off the ground. This allows them to use it without being exposed to predators. Something like this.
