How do I make homemade feed?

If you can't get separate ingredients try a bag of 16 or 20% pigeon grain. This has a lot of peas for protein, millet milo & other things depending on the brand. Find Fertrell dealer in your area (look on www.fertrell.com) or something like Fertrell to buy Poultry Nutri-Balancer (Mineral mix), Aragonite or Oyster shell & fish meal if you want animal protein. When I do it, I use 50 lbs. of16% pigeon grain, 50lbs. of wheat and then mix the minerals & fish meal in. This is not a cheap way to feed. 16 % pigeon is $20, wheat 10.50 and the fishmeal & nutribalancer about .80/lb. I will be around $18-20/50 lb. with 18% protein. Contrary to some beliefs, it is not that hard, as long as they get the minerals & calcium they need. Read the labels on the grain mixes you are going to get & go from there. Free ranging should make it even easier. Good luck. You can tell if your chickens are looking healthy & producing or not. JMHO

Are you wanting to go full fledged homemade or would semi-homemade work also?
A semi-homemade feed would be a lot easier to do than a full fledged homemade.

Chris

Well, Chris since I was interested in trying this for the summer how about semi-homemade? LOL They eat all the bugs and greens they could possibly want now. Let's see what you are talking about?

Here is a picture of my "Scratch" but could be used as a feed also and it is around 18% protein.
It has a all grain Pigeon Feed,
Black Oil Sunflower Seed,
Linseed Pellet,
Alfalfa Pellet,
Game Bird Pellet,
Oats,
Hemp Seed,
And a little added corn.

Would these types of recipies work as like chicken treats? I give my girls left-overs from my table. The LOVE french fries...and cornbread...and spaghetti LOL! Maybe not the best thing to give them I guess.

Some chickens behave more like feathered Goats..... they will eat almost anything even if it is not neccesarily good for them.

In mixing your own feed fish meal is a valuable componant for the protein & oils in it.
Do not expect to save any money though... a well balanced feed is not cheap to make as you do not have the economy of scale the big guys have and you will pay premium prices for your ingredients.
It is nice however to know just what your chicks are gobbeling down
