The oats I bought from tsc are raw and unhulled. I tried adding water and boiling it for a while, but it doesnt thicken even a little bit like normal oatmeal. Do I boil it for longer or are whole oats not suitable for oatmeal?

Those aren’t for eating. They’re for feeding to the birds.

I would consider sprouting them into fodder, and now I'm somewhat interested! :pop

Bird gizzards will grind them down like any seed. But here is a cooking guideline I found that might be helpful it says 60 minutes of boiling..

You don't have the equipment to make oat meal , it requires steaming them soft and rolling the oats flats and in the case of quick oats, cutting them and rolling again.
You can cook them like barley but those are for your chickens

Great idea!
Did it myself with barley grains recently.
Super easy, and the birds loved them.
I've also sprouted (or foddered) barley for my chickens and goats. I read that it was the easiest to sprout with least amount of mold type issues. In my location, it takes at least 3 days longer than stated. It's just not warm enough in my house.

Oats are a tad more challenging.. I read. And I have been unsuccessful at sprouting different types of beans. But it's fun to see the changes and experiment! :D

Going to try some beans next. My brother is baying for some. Have to order some proper organic grains. Wheat was what I originally wanted to try...but we had barley on hand.

OP could give it a go. Much easier than I thought it would be.
