How do I move 100 chickens from Ca. to Florida

Quote:
We learned an expensive lesson when we moved from Ca to Co. We spent 3500 renting a truck and trailer. Those U-Hauls only get about 7 or 8 miles per gallon. At any rate the best thing to do is have a big moving sale. Go through all your stuff and see what it is really worth. Most people can replace a lot of their stuff off of Craigs List for less than what it cost to move it.

As far as the chickens go I would sale them or butcher them.

Not being a stick in the Coop so to speak. You first need to check with the states you are crossing and see what is required from them.
It may not seem important but being a x truck driver you will have to deal with the Agriculture Dept.; Florida's is pretty strick and I have seen them chase people across state lines if they don't pull into their check stations.
I think probably I would start with the AG Dept. in each state and go from there.

Good Luck

I would build a trailer for the trip. Get a 15 to 18 foot landscape trailer. Make 6 foot sides with plywood and 2x4s. Then you can drill with a 1" hole saw. Put in hardwire cages with wooden floors. It would be a better design for chickens. You just got to think out of the box.

Hey,

Depends on when you travel, HEAT will do them in. I would suggest you buy a OLD POS TRAILER... they are cheap, you can run the generator to run the A/C unit. Tear out the furniture and put cages inside. Craigs list has tons of travel trailers some are for FREE.

I would also look at the LAWS health and human services Ag department.
It would totally suck if you got to BFE and had to surrender the birds to the incinerator. Not a pretty sight. ( I have witnessed a family with their pets being quarenteened). Leaving the dogs at a nasty pen, not pretty. And im sure that chickens would get the same treatment as fruit.

Why Florida?

If you are famous singer/celebrity that is well known by young kids, just pay someone to move them for you.....

Some people can be so arrogant on purpose. I am more than willing to pay the cost to have them shipped. I have no intentions on doing anything illegal or inhumane to animals. I was looking for suggestions with out having to do much research. I was hoping that someone on the forum would have the answers that I need put in my lap, than having to research it my self cause I am the kind of person that wishes to have my answers put on my lap and pay for it. Another word I pay the extra dollars to pass through the garbage. And further for your information most kids are not allowed to hear my music.

If money is no object you might look into flying them, it would be much shorter time period.
I would cut it back to the 30 you can't live without and ship 10 or 15 large dog crates.
You'll have to have vet certs on them. But they could get there in a day... just do a direct flight if possible and send them early or later in the fall when you are settled in.

Good luck

Nancy
