how do i raise happy chicks

1. they are barred rock chickens
2. oh thanks:bow

I've heard some plymouth barred rocks are very sweet and cuddly while others are more stand-off ish.
I have PBR and mine are the stand-off ish. I would hold them often. They are all still individuals with their own personality so some may be more willing then others.

I had chicks and 2 were timid and scared and the other 2 were brave and ran to my hand when I went to touch them. I would hold all my chicks and invite a friend over to help me 'tame' them. Chicks can be calmer if they see their fellow mates out with them. I would often hold them until they fell asleep with me holding them and gentle petting. Make slow movements and a soft voice with them. I talked to my chicks all the time. I did not want them to fear me when I let them loose to free range.

do you think i should cape holding them even if they are trying to escape form my hands?

No they will get used to you. Associate your hands with good things. Example: I would hand feed my chicks. Baby chicks LOVE mealworms, cut up grapes, and the gooey soft part of a cantaloupe.. the part we throw out with the seeds. It's ok if they eat the seeds. I did this when they were 2 weeks old. If your chicks are very young still you can use chick starter crumbles or cracker crumbs. The chick starter is very important they eat it so dont over feed the other stuff.. Eventually every time I stuck my hand in their box they ran to me climbing on my hand and trying to see if I had anything. It takes patience and time.

Oh I also noted while handling chicks.. if you cup your hands with one hand under the feet and another over the little wings and back they tend to relax.

Some chicks are still very jumpy so if one chick is constantly jumping off your bottom hand then I would hold around them and let the feet dangle so they are safe.
