Hi, im trying to sell a few of my roosters on craigslist and in about an hour after posting i allready have had 2 replies. The thing im worried about is that many people try to buy roosters to teach there pitbulls to attack or for cockfighting. So how do i tell who the right people are? Please respond i need to know asap.

Tell them to make an offer and if it is like $5 than dont sell it to them. If they really truly want a flock protector than you guys can talk

I had to put a rooster on a local classifieds site last night, and in my ad I said that he is free to a great home on the condition that he be kept alive. What I look for in people responding to my ad is people with decent punctuation, people that aren't demanding and someone willing to develop some type of rapport with you. Also, go with your gut.

I've had 2 responses already, and one of them was a HUGE red flag for me. The person said "hi good morning do you still have your rooster please I need him"....I didn't feel comfortable with that at all. You NEED him? For what?

The person who won me over was polite and willing to talk to me and explain why he wanted him. He has some hens in a nice coop with trees in it and the rooster would have a really nice life.

I think you just need to go with your gut. That's what I do. If you don't find someone right away, keep trying. Someone will eventually want to take a roo and give it a good home. I am a "crazy chicken lady" now, and I made sure the guy who wants him knew that I have expectations of him taking the rooster since I became attached to the little guy.

Hope this helps.

Good for you

And then he got your rooster home and butchered it.

I know that seems cruel and dishonest. but that is what happens. There are people that just look for ads like yours, they are great at telling stories the seller wants to hear. Once they get the bird they either process it or sell it to someone who will eat it.

The sad fact is there are more roosters than people want or can keep. I find my best bet for getting rid of a rooster or getting a rooster I wan it on BYC and our Minnesota thread. We have a very active thread and do a lot of selling, trading of our birds on it. I have gotten birds from 3 people on the thread and got rid of birds to 3 people on it.

I hope you are right and your rooster went to a good home, but the odds are against it.

Ya i had a lakenvelder a blue polish and a bunch of other rare exotic birds and a guy offered me $2 each for all of them!!!!!!! I was so mad. These are beautiful birds that are coming back from the brink of being wiped out. No they can't be the main course!!!!

Thanks for your cold hard truth, but not only do I know this person hasn't butchered it (I still have him. The sale hasn't completed yet.), but this wasn't just some sketchy craigslist sale. It's a local only classified ad...and as I've already explained that I know some weirdos still leak through, I've been making sales on the site for a long time, and I know how to filter out the weirdos. Not everything has to be a negative experience.

My roo is a pure tolbunt Polish. There are plenty of other roosters on the classifieds that are being given up for free for meat or with less intrusive sellers (like myself) asking questions. It is my understanding that the person wishing to take my rooster is interested in the breed, and would like to add it to his flock.

I've been around the block before, and I know I feel good about this situation.

Sure there are people out there doing what you say, but like I said...not everything is a terrible experience. I wasn't asking for opinions anyways. I was simply offering advice to the original poster who was looking for advice on what to look for in a situation like this.

I have comfort in my sale and that is what matters. Thanks.

Tolbunt! Aww if I lived anywhere remotely close i would take him

I've wanted tolbunts for a while. I'm happy to say that my blue polish is currently in an amazing home with a little girl who loves him.

my Delaware is also in a great home. (honestly though i really didn't like the Delaware, but he wouldn't be meat) i sold mine for $15 and they went to happy homes
