I find it interesting the OP didn't mention anything about not wanting their birds to go for meat, but several of the responses addressed that. Honestly, I don't see the problem with buying a bird for meat. if I can sell a rooster to someone who wants to butcher, I'm thrilled to get some $ rather than having to do it myself. OP was asking more about illegal activities.

The birds could be killed by being attacked by dogs or cockfighting. The reason this all started is because I posted my experience of selling on a classified site and what I look for in people wanting to take my bird. I eat chicken, but it is my personal choice to keep MY chickens as pets, and because I had to rehome my rooster, I made clear in my ad that I didn't want him to be killed...then other people chimed in about how my bird that I rehomed was probably already butchered.

From me trying to explain my rehoming process, it turned into killing birds for meat.....

I am not against killing birds. I eat my own birds, I sell birds to others for eating. The Original Post said he did not want them killed. We do not have problems with cock fighters in my area. BUT I see lots of ads where people say they do not want them killed or eaten, I was just commenting on how hard it is to prevent that because of all the cheap people looking for a free dinner and so many sociopaths looking to make a fast buck.

And then he got your rooster home and butchered it.

I know that seems cruel and dishonest. but that is what happens. There are people that just look for ads like yours, they are great at telling stories the seller wants to hear. Once they get the bird they either process it or sell it to someone who will eat it.

The sad fact is there are more roosters than people want or can keep. I find my best bet for getting rid of a rooster or getting a rooster I wan it on BYC and our Minnesota thread. We have a very active thread and do a lot of selling, trading of our birds on it. I have gotten birds from 3 people on the thread and got rid of birds to 3 people on it.

I hope you are right and your rooster went to a good home, but the odds are against it.
What is BYC? I also have soon young Roos
