How do I stop swelling?

Ok, I hope he is not depressed from being beaten up by a duck. The turkey was not the top bird in the flock though, that position was shared between a Muscovy drake, who thinks he is a chicken, and a old RIR rooster. The jake turkey started fighting with the bottom cockerels a few days ago and he beat them up easily. He then got into fights with the mature and experienced roosters and still beat them up easily. After he beat all of the bottom roosters he attacked the RIR and beat him up. This was not really surprising, he is just below 25 pounds and those roosters are like 8 pounds. Well anyways, I guess the turkey decided to fight the Muscovy drake (most of the fight happened when I was gone) and the drake beat the crap out of him, I came back and he was running around trying to escape from the drake who was chasing him. So the turkey did not lose his position, he lost a fight to the bird who was, and still is, holding the top position.

My RIR rooster seems pretty depressed, he moved off of the main roost and roosts out in the run now, even though the turkeys don't even sleep in the same building...

The Muscovy drake seemed happy, he was just sitting around and preening his feathers. He lost his angel wing feathers during the fight.

Do not be surprised when the fight happens again after the turkey heals up.

Muscovy ducks will try to fight almost anything. This guy fights like a chicken, during the start but once he gets hurt he becomes a giant cheater and clamps onto his opponent with his beak. Once he is holding on he just stops moving, the other bird starts to run around and tries to get him off but they can't. Once the other bird gets tired out he will start beating them with his wings. Once he starts to beat with his wings I usually have to step in and split them up because the other bird is to tired out to escape. I am glad the turkey got away by himself because I was not around to help him. I have seen Muscovies get their butts kicked by geese, I was assuming a turkey would beat them too but I guess my BBB is just to heavy to be agile enough or strong enough to fight him.

Muscovy ducks also act really tough, they puff up to my dogs and whenever I trap a coon they go and taunt it. They act strong and it scares some dumb predators who think that a duck might actually put up a fight for their claws and teeth.

I have learned a lot with the time I’ve spent on BYC today. As always!

Thank you.

@R2elk so if they’re hurt, and get depressed- were you implying they’ll have a harder time healing? Do they slow or stop food and water when they’re depressed? I have one who just lost his authority and he’s super depressed. Won’t even fan out. But he’s still eating and drinking.

If he is eating and drinking, he will be fine. Some of them go into a severe depression, stop eating and drinking and basically just lie down and die. It usually occurs when a tom has been the leader for a long time (years) and finally gets a severe thrashing from a younger tom. It is not uncommon for a large group of toms do do a severe beat down of a dethroned tom with even the bottom tom getting his kicks in.
