how do we stop rats?

Cat NO...... I have three ferals running around in my yard this year and have had more mice and rats than ever before. I have had to put wire down in the bottom of my dirt floor coops attaching it to the inside walls, to keep them from diggin under them and coming in. Yes I had burried wire around them about 2 ft. deep but they are very crafty and went below it. Large and small rodents. I have almost finished the wire project. I even went around the eaves and have closed the small holes. What you want to bet the little ones find a way in.
First the cats will find new homes then i will put poison out for the rats.

I read that you can use plaster paris and corn mesh mixed as well. The rats come in my coop during the day to feed. I set up traps and they are not even interested in them.

Ropax Bars work great!
I had a problem with wood rats and coons getting into my yard and trash.
Now they won't come near my house or chickens.
Mcmurray hatchery sells them for about $30 for a bucket of 40.
Well worth the cost.

no poison, its got warfarin in it, it causes the rats who cannot vomit to bleed to death, very slow & painful! have you got a HavaHart trap??

rats are opportunistic feeders, so make it harder to get to the chickees

we got 3 rats today with the air-rifle!!!! Yipeee!!!!! 3 in a ROW!

at about 3pm!!!! I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the creepy buggers running up our fruit trees..... (here all the fruit has fallen, so there are plenty of apples around)

My hubby was slow to react... but even after a few minutes we still got em!!

I'm a bit grossed out.. our neighbour was complaining of rats just last week... we never get any inside! (thanks to the fat cat)

i think tonight will be spent a' huntin......

Poison really worries me. You don't want to kill anything you didn't mean to. I would use traps, Hav-a-heart preferably.

I've heard that Buckeye chickens will go after mice and rats; can anyone (with Buckeyes) confirm this?

mice and rats are allergic to peppermint oil

Peppermint oils sounds like a great idea, however, apparently the chickens don't like the smell. Its been used to keep chickens away.
