Yup, it doesnt sound like you CAN reason with someone like that.
Mom is always worried bout animal control coming out and the police, cuz she thinks someone will report us. Well now I called beforehand to find out the rules, and we ARE allowed hens (no roosters), and I told her, tell em to come on out. I also asked about having the chicks in the front yard when I called, and they laughed and said there was no rule against it, but not many would want them in the FRONT yard. So the only way they would take them is if they are not taken care of.
(Front yard is where all the shade and breeze is for them).
So I told her...let em come, they can see how well we take care of our baby girls, and they cant do a thing!
What I DO worry bout, is some crazy person letting them out. Its like letting a 2 year old child out to wander alone, they dont have the sense to stay in our yard or off the street and would definitely get killed. Dont know where folks that think "they should be FREE" get their attitudes.
They need to get on the battery hen bandwagon and fight for those rights before they look at the backyard folks. It would give em somethin more constructive to do.
(I didnt realize poultry werent included in the humane slaughter acts that were passed)
It's funny I've been ignoring this person and yet they keep typing. Now they are blocked!
I hate blocking people, I love to argue, (it's better then arguing with my DH!
) but you guys are right, you can't argue with a crazy person!
I know in my heart that my birds are very happy and healthy. I was just very frustrated and it does hurt being almost compared to a factory farm. I am a very much against factory farms and this is one of the reasons I keep chickens and buy local foods.
I know that all AR/AW people are not like this. I am involved in quite a few AW groups, I believe in providing the best care for animal no matter how it meets it's end. This I believe should apply to all animals and not just chickens. But I am not a crazy that thinks pets are slaves and should be set free, or cows should be allowed to vote or some of the other nonsense I've heard! I even have Vegetarian and Vegan friends, but they know that there is nothing wrong in the way I raise my birds, otherwise they wouldn't be my friends.
Glad I'm not alone in coming across people like this.
chickenfeathers I will definitely use that bunny nest time, lol!

Absolutely -- almost any backyard hen has a life 1000 times better than a chicken in an industrial set-up. The critics of backyard chicken-raising ought to devote his energy to helping the animals -- and PEOPLE -- in this world who actually are suffering, not picking on people who love their pets.
My chickens are incredibly well cared-for and content. I hang out in their coop sometimes just to absorb some of their positive energy...
People like that are so far out in la la land that they don't realize that without appropriate care domestic animals cannot exist. Letting your chickens out during the night in a predator prone area is nearly the equivilent of dumping a kitten by the side of the road and thinking it will catch mice and survive. The troll is an idiot, and is trying to get you riled up.
I agree, not all AR people are like that; he's just a button pusher. I'm a veggie and align myself with many AR groups, even one very large and controversial one...but at the same time, I show dogs (a BIG no no in the AR world) and I don't see any problem with people killing their own livestock for their own consumption if the animals have been raised happily. The world is not black and white. It's full of gray, and very few people can exist entirely in Extremism Land.
That being said, I do have a very overbearing friend who's retired military and also a lawyer who graduated from Duke, and she constantly baits me with little tidbits like this: "That ban on foie gras in Chicago is just ridiculous. There's nothing cruel about the way foie gras is produced. All they do is shove a metal pipe down their throats once a day to feed them and that's it." Not quite. Sigh.
