How do you deter cats?

My cat comes running home if he gets startled by a loud noise and he doesn't know what it is. It's enough to spook him, and he's not a particularly fearful cat. Some sort of motion sensor alarm might scare him off. I know you mentioned concerns with the motion sensor and the chickens tripping it. If they are not free range you can position it on the door to the coop facing out. Cats, dogs, and wildlife regularly trip my motion sensor light on the coop door, but it's rare that the chickens/ducks trip it. It just needs to be positioned facing out from the coop/run so that something approaching from a certain direction will trip it. You can play with positioning, motion sensors will have a certain range they can detect things from, height off the ground and the angle you position it will make a difference too.

Thanks for all your stories. Loved the fly ribbon. Funny story. I used to have fly ribbon in the coop and it caught me and my hair more than any flies. :he:oops::lau

I am concerned about the cat getting the chickens. I know they say it probably won't attack a grown chicken but my friend had a cat attack and kill one of her chickens. Also have some teenagers who are not full grown yet and they tend to wander outside later than the older chickens.

I gave in and bought a motion sensored sprinkler. I found one that you can have it turn on at night so we will find out when it turns on.

Hopefully this will get the raccoons too since they occasionally come and visit.

We installed an electric wire around base of our chicken yard fence. Goal to keep coons out..... well my male cat got too curious and got a good zap. Didn’t hurt him, but no more fear of my little hunter picking off one of the chickens!
