How do you do the Egg carton method?

On my last hatch I used a paper egg carton from day 18 on.
Did not have any problems, had a wonderful hatch.

Don't i poke the carton full of holes?

Do not leave the eggs in the turner, even off. The chicks can drag their shells with the yolk sack and may tear their umbilical cord.

Use the wire mesh the bators come with if you wish use a cardboard type egg carton. Be sure the carton does not touch any water as it will wick.

I take the top off right down to the upper parts of the individual pockets for the eggs. Be sure the bottom has holes for humidity.

Be sure to candle on day 18 to make sure the air sack is in the correct orientation.

Can you do this in an LG or do you need a bigger fancier bator?

Any sized LG and Hovabators seems to do well with the egg cartons.

Ive used both syrofoam and paper and both works well. Never had to cut the bottom out. However paper is by far the best because it wicks up the moisture from the egg contents and anything poopy they do, it will clean it up.

I poke holes in the bottom of each spot where the eggs will go in. That way, if a chick happens to pip low on the egg, it will get air.

What does the cardboard do to the humidity when introduced the the incubator?
Does it lower the humidity because the carton is absorbing the moisture in the air??

Do you need to use clean, unused egg cartons or brand new ones. Wondering about bacteria problems.
