How do you explain the "chicken poo" when people come to your door??

i only have 3 free range chickens right now and they do the same thing. and if i leave one of the doors open they even go so far as to wander inside. they know where the dogfood is...lol. i wash my porch every evening with an old broom and the waterhose so it don't get too bad but i agree that we all need a sign to put at the end of the walkway leading to the porch, patio, etc.. *** someone could make money off of those... hint hint...ahum...BYC***

I hose down major traffic areas. If you get the poop relatively fresh the hose just washes it away. I have a one year old, so I have to be careful because he still spends a lot of time crawling.

When you try to make explanations or apologies or justifications, you are putting them in control - giving them the power to approve or disapprove.

If you want to post a sign - "Free Chicken Manure - Help Yourself".

You may just find your gardening/composting friends keeping the walk clean for you!!!

I don't seam to have that problem although my laying flock ranges (about 20 birds).

I would just post a sign: How about: It's a BarnYard. Poo Happens! or Watch your step!.

I don't usually have unannounced visitors other than close family. Maybe the GSD that makes them think he is coming in through the window to take a bite has something to do with that. LOL.

We too have a large backyard with 3 hens, 1 roo and 1 very sweet yet spoiled Jack Russell. And of course EVERYONE congregates on the deck to peek in the sliding glass door. Atleast the dog knows to leave his presents in the grass. Even before we got the chickens, I'd go on poop patrol (scoop it with shovel) cause I don't like to have to dance around piles. Now I have lots more piles to scoop. What ever was I thinkin??? Once or twice a week I go over the yard and scoop. I only use the chicken poo for fertilizer, so that gets dumped in either the garden compost or into their pen (deep litter of hay stirred up weekly). The dogs poo is either put in plastic bag for the garbage man or dumped in an obscure corner of the yard.
And the difference is...dog=tootsie rolls, chicken=Hershey's kisses sprinkled with powder sugar. If I can't tell for some reason it's just dumped.
It usually only takes about 1/2 hour if that. As for the deck I try to scoop that too or is hosed off. (This also gives me a chance to check for any problems)
Personally I don't care what others think, but I don't like poo being tracked in the house and have to smell it! Then find and clean off the guilty shoes, shampoo the carpet, mop the floor, etc, etc, etc. Just seems easier to scoop.

I have more problems with the birds that come to hang out to get in where the chickens are. They sit up on the canopy above my hot tub on on the table on the pool deck and make a mess. I also only let my chickens out in the yard in the morning or evenings. They have a decent size run to spend the rest of time in. I also occasionally take the hose and if I see an of their droppings and just wash it away. I think that it is important to keep your surroundings as clean as possible.
