How do you feed a chicken yogurt?

OH I forgot to add that I soak rolled oats in mine and they LOVE it. And it's good for them too

Oh you guys are awesome, thank you! I posted this thinking everyone will think this is a silly question, I wander on the site a bit reading other posts and I come back to check.....about 20 replies! LOL wow!!

I can't wait to try this! Hee. I have a heart shaped bowl I got at Goodwill (it's kinda corny, but cute)...it will be perfect for the yogurt. :-D

BTW, how do you make your own yogurt? My kids love yogurt, so it might be fun to do.

A word of caution- I too am new to chickens, and read on here how much they would love yogurt. I had some strawberry yogurt that the kids decided they "didn't like" (i.e. wanted it at the grocery store, but changed their minds later) and gave it to the hens. They loved it !

The problem - Spot, a Houdan, apparently turned her head to the side to eat it, basically laying her head in the dish, which covered her top feathers with yogurt. (I was at work). The next day, I could not believe how she looked. Her head feathers were covered with other birds feathers, dirt, and shavings, all stuck to the now dried yogurt mess.

So after consulting this site and hoping the yogurt mess it would work out on its own (it did not), we got some baby shampoo, brought her into the kitchen, and gave her a salon treatment ! Let's say that shampooing a chicken is not my forte, but we all survived and she looked 100 % better without all that stuff stuck to the top of her head.

So - yes they loved the yogurt. but keep an eye on any birds with top hats !

Mine all love plain yogurt, and anything else I give them! I mix cheerios in with theirs and have to put out multiple dishes.

In the winter, for a few extra carbs I make them some plain wheat pasta or brown rice (cooked of course). Cheerios are a particular favorite with all the chickens ducks and guineas. You can also plant some clover and rye grass to use for winter forage.
