HOW do you get the vaseline on their combs?

The way i understand it is that they get chapped skin, so i am doing my gals when the temps get down to freezing, i think what it does besides giving them a massage- is moisture will be repelled from the vaseline- some folks say it works, and it can't hurt them- so i do wattles and combs just to be on the safe side- we are expecting negative temps thursday and friday nite- yikes!

When it is freezing big time! Really its just soft and bare skin and can get frostbite. I put some on my light brahma and she seemed very pleased when it was freezing and very windy out. I think if she could have spoken she would have thanked me

I have my daughter hold my gals & one of them ate the vaseline right off the q-tip that I was using! She looked like she enjoyed it all too well! It was my black star...she eats everything! Now I hold her head as I put it on.....silly chickens!

I manage to do it myself (since it's hard to convince my husband to leave our warm house to help me in the chilly coop!). I catch a hen or one of our roosters, hold them snuggly with their wings tucked in against their body on my left side (like you would hold a football), and with my right hand rub in a good gob of Vaseline on their combs and wattles. I find if they are held snuggly they do not struggle or move their heads too much. I started doing it when I noticed our Barred Rock roosters and hens had some black spots on their combs. The Vaseline seems to be keeping frostbite at bay on really cold days.

I read somewhere that it was actually the massaging of the comb as much as the vaseline itself that helps prevent frostbite: the idea is that massaging improves blood circulation, and blood circulation keeps the comb warm.

Husband holds them while I use a gloved hand and rub down their combs and wattles...they look kinda funny with it on their feathers. Dh doesnt believe it is helpingbut I think we just started doing it too late. Prevention is the key!

The easiest way that I've found is to shove a couple globs of vaseline into a paintball gun and shoot it at them. The power of the CO2 really creates quite a spread of vaseline.... I mean WOW!
