How do you guys feel about the booster seat laws being put in place?

I know what you're saying, and I respect it. I think that you and your kids should wear a seatbelt to protect yourselves, but only if that is your wish. People who know the risk of not wearing a seatbelt and still choose not to should be able to make that choice. I always wear one, even if just driving across a parking lot, but I know my dad never wears one. He has a serious bladder condition, and the seatbelt puts a lot of pressure on his bladder and causes him a lot more pain, on top of the pain he already has to deal with. That's his choice for his own reasons.

Just 8 weeks ago, a boy in my grade was in a terrible accident. He flatlined and had to be life flown to Vanderbilt, and is now in a rehab facility. He suffer a lot of brain damage and now has trouble remembering, walking, talking, etc, but he's getting better by the grace of God. There is really NO REASON he should have lived. His neck was broken, his pelvis and legs fractured, he had brain damage, lacerated kidney's and liver, two collapsed lungs, and his speen was so damaged it had to be removed. That seatbelt and God's grace are probably the only reason he is alive.

I just think that it should be everyone's choice for themselves and their families. They are adults and no the consequences. If they choose to risk it, its none of my business, or anyone elses, to tell them that its wrong.

The point is the adult may decide it's a waste of time, money, whatever, but it's thier children that have to pay for that choice. One of the jobs of being a parent is to do nothing that puts your child in avoidable risk. Or as my MIL says, "once you know better you do better".

Also in Australia you have to wear a helmet when riding a push bike. Do you have to do this in the United States?

LA~Poulet :

Purplechicken, regarding your comment about these laws being in place b/c of insurance purposes & special interest groups, not to save a child,

Insurance might be part of the reason, but I remember receiving fliers and emails about a woman who had lost her 6 year old son b/c he flew out of his seatbelt & out a window when a car hit their suburban, and he was killed instantly. She made it her mission to mandate boosters and raise public education about the inefficiency of seatbelts for children, in the late 90s? If I had to guess, I'd think her organization (the name escapes me now) probably had a big part in the movement... and she dedicated herself to raise awareness & save lives in memory of her son.

I'm confident we all agree on the fact kids need to be protected but this
becomes relative. Here is some logic (and yeah it's a little off topic):
All of this stuff is about reducing the odds of something happening.
If you go with that line of thinking than children should be in the cars
ONLY when ABSOLUTELY NECCESARY. If using a booster seat reduces
the chance of injury than reducing trips in the car can reduce it even
more. This is simple math. So kids should never be put in the car to
run out to get a pizza or just for a ride. Get my point?

Where do we draw the lines and what role should the government play?

I'm sorry but that woman who lost her kid dedicated her life to her
"cause" to alleviate her guilt and give herself purpose. Sorry of this
sounds insensative but it's a reality. Her minor pressure on politicians
may have quickened the passing of the laws but it's the big money that
makes it happen. The fact she dedicated herself to this cause is still
noble and hopefully she did increase awareness which may have resulted
in lives being saved. I hope so.

Again, this goes back to the government mandating almost every aspect
of our lives. That is a HUGE problem.

BTW the politicians love it when we debate and argue things like this.
It distracts us from them stealing baby's piggy banks.

Yeah, we have that law here too. Kids must wear a helmet.

Purple,
I do adore you dear, but these laws aren't there for parents who would put them in thier boosters and seatbelts anyways, but for the kids who's parents would not unless it is a law with a hefty fine ($1,000 in CA, a second time and CPS comes and interviews your kids). Those kids need to be protected as well, and for some people you have to hit them in the wallet before they care.

I wish the world doesn't work like this either, but I also would hate to lose a student because thier parents resented goverment intrusion, you know?

I uhhh don't actually know how to ride a bike. I grew up in downtown and there was no place to learn or put one. You better believe my kids wear a helmet, all that work in thier education, need to protect those brains.
