How do you guys feel about the booster seat laws being put in place?

I hate the seat belt laws. Hate them, hate them, hate them!!! It's such a pain to have to switch booster seats from car to car, and the kid can't strap himself in with the booster seat, and blah blah blah. However, I do understand why the BS (see, even the acronym says what it is!!!) is required. I hate them because it's an inconvenience, not because they aren't a safety aid.

The reason the law is in place is because, sadly, many parents only think about themselves and won't buckle their children in (not to say that about anyone who has posted here, I'm talking about what another poster said: you're driving down the road and you see the mom/dad strapped in, but there's a half dozen kids jumping around out of control in the backseat and the parent are seemingly unaware/don't care). The purpose of the law is to try to force the irresponsible parents to make sure their kids are safe, especially since riding in a vehicle is one of the highest risk things you can do nowadays. Hope this post won't cause any problems, I'm just giving my 2 cents....

umm, yeah ditto in Florida! That's crazy and i had 2 preemies~ No excuse!

i am surprised at how many don't! Has anyone ever seen what happens to someone when they go through the windshield or propelled from the car? I mean as an adult, your choice but people buckle up your kids, 15 years you could get if they died. Trust me it happened to a girl i knew, sad, so sad!

I know a woman who was walking home from the shops with her 2 children and a friend was driving by and stopped to offer her a lift.
but she didn't have any booster seats in the car, but the lady excepted the lift, she put her 4 year old in the back seat and she decided to nurse her 1 year old on her lap. About 1 km down the road a drunk driver came flying around a corner and the driver who offered the lift to her friend swerved to avoid the on coming car but hit the guard rail and the two children were thrown from the car. I believe you just can't risk it.

This one is directed at the OP, specifically.

As a 17 year old, you are currently subjected to laws designed to protect children. These include: drinking age, legal contract age, smoking age (your state may have a lower age than my state), marriage age and others. Until recently you were not allowed to drive or hold a full-time job. You are still included on your parent's insurance and income tax. While you might not agree with these laws, they are in place for your protection, the seat belt law is no different. As a society, it is in our best interest to protect children. These laws change over time, and reflect the changes in society. What was allowed in the past doesn't mean it will be allowed in the future. Two centuries ago children worked in factories at 10, drank and smoked by 12, had children at 14 and died by forty. Society changed, laws changed and the world changed.

Good common sence and their are definatly more cars on the road these days than when I was a kid and that wasn't that long ago.​

It's that rebellion that gets us every time. Including me. I put my kids in seats every time, but I don't wear a seatbelt most of the time. It's not that i'm afraid of the ticket. I just know I couldn't liive with myself if one of them died. But that has nothing to do with the law. If they are so concerned with others lives, why don't they outlaw dangerous jobs, motorcycles, fast food, cigs, and everything else. Need that money. Here last month seat belt became a primary offense in AR. Meaning they can pull you over for it. Wow another reason for them to pull people over. On our road I have watched one cop pull 5 people over in 30 min. No exaggeration. He would leave one and go to the next.

Wow - so many different views on this... interesting. The seat belt law, IMO isnt fully enacted where it should be. (for those wondering, I am a huge PRO-seat belt supporter)

I do not go anywhere without my seat belt on - and anyone that gets IN my car must wear it or they will be hitting pavement, period. My kids have always worn theirs, have always been in appropriate car and booster seats (VA has had the booster seat law for years now - age/weight requirement). My son is little for his age, he's going to be 11 in October, is about 58 inches and weighs just in at 75 lbs now. He's not in a booster but he does wear his seat belt - and we also have an adapter to make sure the seat belt doesnt "ride up" onto his neck. They do make them for shorter people

to ensure a proper fit.

Here in VA they will ticket you for not having a seat belt on yourself, and for every person also in your vehicle not wearing one. They can (and do) pull you over just for that offense.

I personally think they should have seatbelts where they are MOST NEEDED - school buses!! Now that annoys me to death!

The one vehicle where there are LOADS of children and no seat belts!! UGH! School buses are overcrowded as it is... they want you to sit 3 to a seat for kids - and..kids today are not the sizes we were - you'd be lucky to fit 2 kids on a seat - and I've complained a dozen times over to the school board about just that thing; they say "no money for new buses/bigger seats" My suggestion - then put LESS students on the buses - problem solved." Their answer (of course you know they have one right?) "We're short staffed as it is."

Annoying to say the least. So my child's life isnt worth the extra money we tax payers pay each and every year to purchase new school buses to ensure our childrens safety? Hmmm...... Makes one think what really is important.

This goes for bicycle helmets as well - I am 100% FOR helmets - cannot tell you how many times I've seen kids riding in the street without wearing one and my son is there whining "But whyyyy do I have to wear one Mom? They arent..." only to see in the next few moments that same little boy biting it hard on the gravel and being rushed to the ER, blood pouring from his head. The look on my son's face was priceless - and even moreso when he came over and said "Never mind.. I really like my helmet now".

The kid got 12 stitches....and to this day..still rides without a helmet on
