It's good, isn't it? I personally wouldn't fancy a life doing this volunteer work cos I'm really not that sort of girl...
But my mother gives donations regularly at her hall, and wants to start preaching more. She's extremely busy with her studies

That's great! So your mom is a JW? My DH is baptized,my 2 youngest are working on it...and myself as well.

Yes, my mum is a JW, has been since 2007

Me... I've never been that dedicated, I'll sometimes get a bit annoyed when she doesn't stop making references to the Bible when talking about everything... but I appreciate the message.

So...no money changes hands and no one gets money for food or shelter and the church buildings aren't supported by offerings or donations? Money just appears but no one asked for it or arranged for ways it could be given?

That seems strange because my sis is JW and they are told exactly how much percentage of their wages should be given to the church and the church demands to know just how much you make so they can calculate that amount for you. They also get paid gas allowance to drive door to door.

Really? I've never heard of that before

They usually just announce how much money they've received, how much their expenses are, and finish with "Thank you for the donations"

That may be... one of my truck drivers is a JW and he paints a different picture. He is about 60 something and still believes the old teachings. Him and I would have discussions about our faiths and when he would get stumped he would go home and call his elder to get an answer. I enjoyed his stories just could not believe everthing as he painted it as.

No...they have seen more meaning in the scriptures. The bible foretells that information will get brighter as time goes on....the 144,000 are the anointed who are bought from the earth to serve with Christ in heaven under His heavenly throne...the "other sheep" will live on a paradise Earth.

It is hard...especially with so much opposition...but the JW's always make it fun and make me feel refreshed when I go

Well, people just put in however much money they want, whenever they want.

There are boxes around the halls, for people to use. No obligations, no set amounts.

The opposition mostly, I have many friends who think very badly of them, and they have nothing to say besides "Ah.... Interesting..." when I tell them mum is a JW.

I go some of the time, although usually I take something else to read as a backup in case nothing interesting is on the program

The gas allowances are only for the overseers who spend every minute in the work....and yes, they SUGGEST a percentage....but it is not monitored to see who did and didn't contribute. There is a donation box in every hall for people to put their money into, anonymously. And yes, they vote on if the congregation as a whole agrees to cover the amount needed for the overseers. It is always a very small amount...the witnesses strive to live simply in this overly materialistic world.
