I call those people 'security blankets', or the objects anyway. It's become a vice - a security blanket - if it's not there, right there, next to them, they can't handle it. I once saw a restaurant with SEVEN iphones for 6 people, all of them chatting on FB (with one spare? no idea it was just there) about where they were but not talking much to each other. It was depressing, but that's how people are with security blankets I suppose.
It's up to them. They can run around and be materialistic, I am a little too - we all have our things. I just know that sometimes the best things in life are soaking in a creekbed with a friend and a tree rope, having lunch on a sunny day with old cheese and fresh bread or taking the dog in the backseat for a drive through the country.
