Most feed stores get chicks from a hatchery who has already sexed the chicks, unless they are straight run/as-hatched. Sexlinks are just that- bred so that males and females are different colors at hatch. Most vent sex their chicks and some have them bred to where they may be feather-sexed. Barred varieties can be sexed by color of legs, down, and the character of the head spot, such as Cuckoo Marans, Barred Rocks, and Dominiques.
