How do you live with yourself eating the birds you raised?

the secret is out....

I guess it just goes to show how important editors can be. Sure am glad I'm not running for office.

Well, I guess it also depends on the individual, one of my son won't eat our chickens not even their eggs and the other thinks they are very tasty and even wants to watch!

Well we have several varieties of chickens. We have BR, EE, leghorns, Buff's, Del's, polish, RIR's, & Silkies. Out of our whole flock not one is mean. BUT our EE, & BR's are among the most unfriendly. They are flighty, and the hardest for us to catch. My leghorns are the best, they come right up into the house sit on our laps, & eat out of my hands. I believe I have a pic or two of them on my page. We just did an EE roo the other day & he was of decent size for a 7 month old chicken.

Good luck!

I won't have ANY of this! We use a killing cone....not one of the expensive stainless steel ones, but it's actually a "traffic cone"...you can buy them at Lowe's for $10.00....cut off part of the top, so that when hung upside down, the chicken's head fits right in, body cradled snuggly inside the cone itself; then, the head is removed with a good sharp knife, there's no suffering, so 'running around,' no mess. Very humane, and very neat....the bird drains into pail directly below the cone and then it's ready for it's bath for the plucker.

I cannot stand when people torture an animal before butchering just because youe just about to kill it anyways. I dont find ANY of it funny, watching the flop around etc. I dont enjoy butchering chickens, but I dont mind it. We use an ax to cut the head off on a wood block and let it flop on the grass and them scald and pluck. Its does as quick as possible for the bird.

I know how you feel.
I wanted to get birds to be able to have fresh chicken to eat. It took a long time but I just had my first ones butchered this weekend by the amish. I thought about it when I was dropping them off knowing their fate but finally put it out of my head. They are here not only for their egg production and for my enjoyment but also to eat.
I will be grilling my first fresh chicken tonight. I can't wait! I hope it is as good as everyone says!

I agree. It makes you somewhat like Tyson. You're torturing them. Now when they used to just chop the heads off and they ran... They were already dead.

I watched Food Inc. That's when I decided that if I still wanted to eat meat, I needed to "man up" and know where my food comes from. For our family, that means raising some of our own. I want to know that the animal I am eating lived a good life while it was alive. I want my kids to know what it's REALLY like to take full responsibility for your food. Our animals are loved, cared for, and allowed to live the best life we can give them. Some of them will become food. When they do, they will continue to be treated with respect. They will be killed in the most humane way I know, and we'll think twice about wasting food and eating huge portions. Our society has taken the relationship out of our food production. I'm not going to be happy when I have to start butchering, but I will be able to say that I know my food, and because of that, I hope that I will value it more.
