I stained mine first with one coat, then put the battens on and stained the whole thing twice more. I painted mine Red Baron Red with white trim around the door and windows.
I wish I had put a primer on first but the paint store guy said I didn't have to, hhmmm think he was wrong. It used to much of the solid stain.
My coops have held up very well considering I live in the rainy PNW. We have used OSB in some of the horse run in shelter walls and so far so good. It has held up very well considering it is going on 6 years now.
We used the saw mill off cuts (slabs) from cedar logs to side the horse shelters. I nailed them on the vertical. I put one row of large rock at the bottom, so the slabs sit on it instead of close to the ground. They look like log buildings.
