Like others have said, you are looking in a different direction for your bloodline than what her male will conform to in your mind. You're not sure if it's genetics will mesh well with yours.

Like most show stock , even if good, you need the buck to be strong in areas where the does are weak. So just infor her that buck, is not a good match for the does you have, Your buck could be great show stock, but with the wrong does ,good show stock will not be produced.


Know fact pick mates , that are strong areas where the other is weak area.

Good rabbit breeders would understand why you don't want her buck. When I was looking for a good lionhead buck recently, I contacted everyone and their brother. The great breeders were very honest. I told them about my does and their faults and what I was looking for in a buck and why (my does are on the large side, long in the ear and somewhat long backed....I need a small, short backed buck, short ears, wide in the face, in a color that will work for me). I had one breeder say straight up "I do have a REW Buck but his ears are a bit long, so not what you would want". It doesn't mean her buck is bad. He should just be put with does that don't have ear length issues.

What is wrong with her buck? If she really requires an explanation I would tell her straight up why you don't want him. Don't say "your buck sucks". But be honest about whatever it is that is lacking in him. Maybe she needs some education?

I get offered all sorts of things i don't want or need. I do give them a good look over to evaluate the potential, I stop and think about it, and then say "I think I'll pass for now, I just don't have the room/space/etc" or whatever floats my boat at the moment. I may even say "gosh, I wish my does had short ears so they could work with this buck, because I just love his face/hair/personality/toenails/lol".

The truth is the best answer. He's just not what I'm looking for, but thank you anyway. If you think she's pushing him at you because she knows his weaknesses, she'll understand why you don't want him. She may get a little upset, but only because she knows you saw thru her.

Now, today was our second show. I have noticed that both shows, our rabbits won every competition but best in show. All the other angoras being shown are not near the quality of ours. My dilemna is, oh this needs a short story.

Betty Chu, the Grand Dame of English angora breeders has won so many shows that when someone sees her at a show, they know they are not going to win, so they feel like they have wasted their money. I do not want us to get in that position. Case in point: Many are entering english at the national show, just so they can attend knowing they don't stand a chance because Betty is showing there.

Two shows in row we kicked everyones butt. While great for us, I know these other breeders work just as hard as we do with their rabbits. And I don;t want to make enemies.

I will not take this gal's buck, and I am just going to be honest and tell her to show me what gets with her next litter. I still want a fawn buck, but I could go for a broken blue or broken opal as well.

You know what, I paid big bucks for a buck from the lionhead breeder who Best of Breed at Nationals two years in a row. I spent a couple hours at a show with her recently, getting tons of good info. Part of what she mentioned is that she is considering adding new blood to her program. She has bred for years without adding anything new.

And then she said that someone asked her what she thought she would get from adding something new. Will she get better rabbits? She already has the best stock in the country. Adding other people's stock isn't exactly going in the right direction.

Sounds like you are in the same position. If you have the best stock in the area, there is no reason to add other lines from within your area. It would be one thing if this buck was decent in all areas and excelled in area your doe needs work on. But that is not the case.

Trading seems pretty common in the rabbit world, so it may not have been anything other than a simple offer. A lot of people trade back and forth....easy way to get what you want while getting rid of what you don't want. This only works when the other person has what you want and wants what you don't.

When I was at that show recently, I had my big fat doe Tribble there. The point of my buying the buck from this breeder was to help with the issues I am having with that doe in particular and also my other does. They are big for the breed, and long. And that breeder stopped me in my tracks and was perfectly honest with me. She said that she wouldn't even bother breeding her. She said she would just spend the money to buy a top of the line pair or trio and go from there. She said it would take years to get where I needed to be using that doe.

Now, I take this with a grain of salt as she is the top breeder in the country. Well yeah, it would take years for me to get my stock near her stock's level (if ever!). But I understand the concept. Why start with crap and try to fix all the problems?

Yes Nella that is what I am going to do. I do need to find another buck that is not related though. It appears I am going to have to be rather picky, and I don't have a snooty bone in my body, so this is all new to me. I was pretty amazed to realize that our buns are better than most in this area. It just hit me today. No best in show yet, but once they keep seeing the same rabbit over and over it is bound to happen eventually. And I REALLY want that on her pedigree. My other two have BiS already.

ETA: As you know, we are new at this and learning everyday. It seems trades are pretty common. I was considering another breed to show as well. Just haven't narrowed it down. Ken likes breeds that are different, like Giant Flemish, petite Britannias, etc., however I do not want to start another breed that we have to search for others to show with us for numbers. Already have that issue.
